Is a car needed for travel in the Dolomites?

Me and my mum are traveling to Italy at the end of July on a bit of an impulse trip. Were landing in Milan and are planning on staying there two nights then heading up to the Dolomites from there. Our trip is 2 weeks all together.

So, Im wondering if renting a car or taking the public transport route would be best. My worries are pricing; were willing to pay a bit more for rental car but if its ridicilously more expensive than public transport then wed rather opt out. Also were wondering if we can see pretty sports that are less crowded with public transport at all. The third thing is finding accomodation in such short notice near any bus stops. Im sure itd be easier to find accomodation further away.

Anyone have any experiences with this? Thanks in advance!
