Is using miniatures slowing down your game?

After 50++ years of playing the game, i have never used minis. I have developed a pretty good ability to describe a room effectively, keep track of all my players and monsters (sometimes that needs a little sketch behind the screen) and keep the flow going.

I know minis add a visual flair, but i've never been able to afford them, so I've had to make do.

i made a 2 minute video about it on youtube. u/mystre63

Why do we always start in a tavern?

I've been playing a long time and i know that getting a group to agree to go on an adventure together in a "story-appropriate" way can be a challenge. We all too often start in a bar somewhere and loosely associate the party in ways that make no sense and slow down play. Can get REALLY "draggy" if the Paladin needs to ask 100 questions of the Rogue about where he was on the night of the 20th...

Why not share some ideas about how you start or how your DM has started your campaigns? I feel they should be engaging, fit with the story and get things started with the minimum of fuss. In the best world, the campaign start is the first chapter in the story, so it should really grab the players. Try not to make it dull and boring.

I made a video on my channel Mystre63 on youtube. Maybe you will find some ideas there. I've included a link below. I hope that doesn't break any rules... Have fun!
