Starting Strattera before an exam?

Hi everyone,

I was prescribed strattera for what we presume is ADHD. I wanted to ask your thoughts on if I should start this medication now or if I should hold off for a few months.

Note, I have never taken any medication for adhd before.

Essentially I have a huge exam in August. I struggle severely with focus, especially reading, and am excited about the prospect of potentially improving my focus and staying on task.

I have heard however, that this medication takes a while to come into effect, and that some of the early side effects are rough.

Given I’m about 3 months out from my exam, would starting this medication now be a bad idea? Do you think I will have time to adjust? I’m studying for the exam now, and am afraid it might mess up the strategies I am currently using to help me study despite the difficulties I experience daily.

FWIW: I have strong family hx of adhd, and have been diagnosed by a psychiatrist. I am not taking this just to try and boost my exam score. My exam is important, but treating this horrendous ability to maintain focus is priority.

Thank you!

TL;DR - Is it a bad idea to start this medication a few months before a huge exam?

Anyone here take Strattera?

I was prescribed strattera/atomoxetine for what we presume is ADHD. I’m taking the MCAT in a few months and wanted to know if anyone here feels like it helped or hurt their studying.

FWIW, I have a reasonable amount of motivation to study, but severely struggle to stay focused on one task. I struggle staying focused while reading/writing.

Long story short I’ve been studying for the MCAT for about 4 months. I haven’t taken a practice test in a while but I am most likely sitting around 505-509 range. I’m not applying until next year, but I don’t want to drag the studying out to where I burn myself out or start forgetting things.

I’m scheduled to test in late July, but am considering pushing to January of next year (all August/September dates this year are booked :(

I’m nontrad, so a high MCAT is key to a well rounded application given I’ve been out of school for a while. I want to take classes this fall, to help boost my mediocre GPA, but I know a high MCAT would also substitute a lackluster GPA.

My question to you is, for those that took a similar path and pushed their MCAT to the “next cycle” how did that go? Do you encourage or regret it for any reason? I’m worried about knowledge retention and losing study momentum, but the extra time may be super helpful.
