Some of the first casualties from the heatwave, two preemie baby squirrels 💔They need your well wishes!

It appears that mama squirrel gave birth prematurely, and had these poor little ones on the hot pavement. They have burns all over their skin, but are lively. The odds of babies this premature surviving is slim, because they often don't even exhibit a suckle reflex. But one of them did attempt to for a second, so it's giving me a little bit of hope! To put into perspective just how small these two are, a normal healthy newborn squirrel usually weighs around 20 grams. These two weigh only 9. If I didn't know better, I would have thought they were mice or rats based on their size!

The next coming days will be some of the deadliest days for wildlife this season. The extreme heatwave, paired with the USA's anniversary tomorrow, will be a deadly combination. The fourth is already a difficult & deadly time for wildlife because of the fireworks, and I suspect that the occasion tomorrow will bring even more fireworks and more animal injuries/deaths. Please be on the lookout for wildlife in need after the festivities, and especially the next morning. Wildlife will be confused and disoriented and might need your help!

Any support so we can continue providing care to the local wildlife is always appreciated! We are already short on Henry's blocks and could use some more 🩵

This beautiful boy came to me at 1am and is looking much better than his adorable, but pitiful, finder's picture! Lol

Meet Otis the Opossum! He lost grip of his ride and was found abandoned early in the day. I wasn't contacted by the finder until midnight! No one was available to take him. Once I said I could take him, the finder had to go back and look for him where she had initially seen him, many hours earlier. 😟 (if anyone ever finds wildlife in need, make sure you secure them before you call around for a rehabber! They can be predated upon or simply just wander away, and you might not find them later!)

After some searching, she found him, 🎉 but she unfortunately couldn't drive the long distance to bring him to me. It was much too late (past 1 am!) to find a volunteer transporter. One wouldn't be available until the following morning, and I didn't like the look of him in the picture. His eyes were sunken and he looked extremely dehydrated. I was also sure he was hypothermic, considering how long he was on his own. I was worried he wouldn't make it until morning. I had to figure something out... . Then I had the idea to get Otis an uber courier, just for him! 💡 And thankfully, a brave, animal loving uber driver took him the distance and got a nice tip from me for the bizarre request! 😄

Isn't he just precious? 🥰 Even though he doesn't look too hot in the first picture, I just can't get enough of it! Look at that little face peeking out of the grass!

Wildlife rehab desperately in need of food donations!

Hi everyone! Our NY state wildlife rehab is in desperate need of some food donations for our baby squirrels. It's been an intense baby season already, so our seasonal budget is tight and we have already exhausted a huge portion of it on formula/food costs for our squirrel intakes alone. 🐿️ (they need a squirrel emoji, that's a chipmunk!)

Each baby squirrel we save goes through around 2lbs ($40) of formula powder to make it to weaning age and then they eat 2/3 rodent blocks a day when they wean, and we have a lot of babies! With all the babies we have, they can go through a $25 bag of blocks in less than a week! That's not even including the fresh produce and nuts! 🌰 it's a pricy endeavor for us volunteers and we would so much appreciate any help from the amazing fellow squirrel lovers here on Reddit!

You can purchase them directly for us from our Henry's Healthy pets wishlist here: https://xfkkeq.littleregistry.com/AcornAndIvy

Or send us a donation directly to us on Venmo: @Karina-Mid Or cash app: $hksldb

All donations will fund the care of wildlife and full transparency can be provided upon request!
