a bit of backstory: When I was young I used to get gel nails done with my mum when she was getting hers done. Not super often but a good handful of times. As I started to get older I would get acrylic nails done in the salon. Ive always been a very artistic creative person so naturally the more into getting my nails done I started to do them on my own. (which I loved). Eventually at around 12 years old I started taking terrible urticaria reactions the doctors couldn’t work out what was causing this they would cover my arms, upper thighs, face, hands and cause swelling on my lips. The only way doctors could find to get rid of this was a 7 day course of steroids. (the last reaction I had before a diagnosis resulted in me in an abundance as the urticaria spread to my throat and this along side a panic attack made me struggle to breathe) Eventually after consulting many local GPs, dermatologists and paying for private medical treatment we landed on an acrylate allergy. Since then ive only taken a reaction a handful of times and each time has been due to my own negligence of trying out new ways to get acrylic nails hoping I wouldn’t be allergic. (learned the hard way there is unfortunately no way around it).
Now I don’t have reactions anymore as I keep away from acrylic nails and anything containing fast dying glues. (eyelashes, superglue ect) However I have pretty severe dry skin around my eyes and suspect it is caused by mascaras containing acrylates. Im a super girly girl and am not prepared to give up wearing mascara so honestly just cut my losses and deal with the dry skin for the benefit of having pretty eyelashes (probably not the wisest decision but i’m young and love makeup)
Anyway, I am now 17 (i got diagnosed with the allergy at 12) and I’m thinking about getting my first tattoo when ai turn 18 I have been obsessed with tattoos since I was young and dont want to accept that this allergy may mean I cannot get one. So if anyone could let me know some tattoo inks that haven’t caused them a reaction id be super thankful. as well as any tips around healing with an acrylate allergy.
It might be superficial but the whole idea of not getting my nails done or getting eyelash extensions or anything of that sort really sucks. it feels like such a non problem when I try and explain it to others but not having the things regular teenage girls get like their nails done for going on vacation really makes me feel terrible so I don’t want to have to add tattoos to the list of things I cant do.
also a tip for anyone who may care: the Tatti lashes so sensitive glue though not the strongest eyelash glue has never caused me a reaction and is now my go to for keeping my dry eyes at bay!!
(this is my first post on reddit so i’m a bit nervous but any help is welcomed and i hope everyone’s allergy’s aren’t causing them too hard of a time I know how rough it can be)
