Is remote access a viable substitute for a Windows laptop?

I'm an incoming freshman studying Mechanical Engineering and now I'm getting the laptop that I'll be using for college. I know the general consensus is to get a Windows laptop for software compatibility, but I really like the portability and battery life of a Macbook Air. (M5) I was wondering if remote access with a Macbook was a valid replacement for a Windows laptop. The Windows laptop I'm considering is a Zephyrus G14.

Looking for a laptop for college (Secondary question: does remote access serve as a viable substitute for a Windows laptop?)

LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Country

United States

Budget

Not important, but hopefully less than $3000

Are you open to refurbs/used options?

Yes

Screen size

13"-16"

Weight limit

Any, but lighter is preferred

Purpose

Mostly schoolwork, specifically mechanical engineering. Maybe some occasional gaming, but it's not a major deciding factor. I have a good Windows desktop at home I could remote access to circumvent the compatibility issues and I'm also wondering if remote access is a sufficient substitute for a Windows laptop.

Form factor

Clamshell

Intended usage

Need a laptop that will be mostly used for schoolwork as a mechanical engineering student (at SBU if that's important)

Desired battery life

The more the better, but I'd say at least 4-5 hours.

Please list, in order of most important to least important, the priority between Size, Weight, Performance, Battery life

Battery life, Performance, Size, Weight

Info/Requirements

High refresh rate is nice, but not necessary
