I’ll be heading to the Philippines in August and I’m looking for some recommendations for good cultural experiences. I’ve a background in anthropology (indigenous farming primarily) and am looking into the rice terraces, but wondering about other areas I might like to visit with less tourist traffic and more authentic experiences. Also love wildlife, marine life, and coastal regions. Any off the beaten path recommendations?

Note: im a solo English speaking female traveler, though may have a friend with me for some parts of the trip and do know some locals in Manila and Bicol. I enjoy backpacking and have some gear though I’m trying to decide whether it’s worth dragging it with me.
