I loved DC x Sonic, but Beast Boy turning into Mobians got me thinking

I recently learned more about Beast Boy's lore because of DC x Sonic, and something caught my attention.

In DC x Sonic, we see Beast Boy transform into what appears to be a Mobian echidna and a Mobian fox (I know "Mobian" isn't an official game term, but we don't really have an official name for Sonic's species yet).

The thing is, it seems like the crossover is generally trying to use the most recognizable and canon-friendly versions of both universes. However, this particular version of Beast Boy doesn't really feel like the one connected to the Red. It feels much closer to the more "Martian" interpretation of the character.

The Beast Boy associated with the Red is the magical/cosmic/supernatural version of the character, and arguably the most "canon" modern interpretation. In this version, he can transform into animal-equivalent creatures. To be more specific, creatures with relatively low intelligence. The Red is the multiversal force of wild nature, much like the Speed Force is the multiversal force of speed.

Because of that, there are fairly clear limits. He couldn't transform into a Kryptonian person, but he could become an animal native to Krypton. He couldn't become a Martian or a human, but he could become prehistoric monsters or even mythical creatures like dragons or phoenixes.

There is also the more "Martian" interpretation of Beast Boy, which stems from Miss Martian giving him a blood transfusion. This mutation turned his skin green and gave him shape-shifting abilities similar to those of Martians. (>!Even though Miss Martian herself is technically a White Martian, that's just genetic variation, since her mother is a Green Martian and her father is a White Martian, and most of her siblings are green.!<)

This version of Beast Boy doesn't seem to share the Martians' weakness to fire, which could easily be explained by the fact that he lacks their psychic abilities, since that weakness was psychologically imposed on Martians by the Guardians.

Because this version changes its body on a molecular level, like Martians do, I could see him becoming intelligent species regardless of how sapient they are. However, unlike the mystical version connected to the Red, he probably wouldn't be able to replicate extremely complex creatures.

Honestly, I think the writers simply thought it would be really fun to see Beast Boy turn into a Sonic species. In the same way that it's fun to see Flash and Sonic racing each other as equals, Shadow using vehicles despite being faster than most cars, Sonic using Chaos Control against Reverse-Flash, Batman beating Metal Sonic with enough preparation, and so on.

And honestly, that's kind of the whole point of a crossover: it's supposed to be fun.

I actually enjoyed it a lot. I just wasn't familiar with Beast Boy's lore, so I decided to look into the character.

What do you guys think? Am I overthinking it, or does Beast Boy turning into Sonic species fit better with the "Martian" interpretation of his powers than with his connection to the Red?

If Sonic and Mario had always existed in the same world, certain things would probably be reinterpreted to fit that reality.

For example, I once heard someone say that Vector could be a Kremling, which honestly makes a lot of sense to me.

Following that same logic, I started thinking about how other things could be connected. For example, King Boo and King Boom Boo (yes, that really is his name) could be the same entity.

I think this could work if King Boom Boo were some kind of alternate form of King Boo — something like Fleetway Super Sonic — a wilder and less rational form.

As for Bowser, the Koopas could be descendants of the Zeti, just like the Babylon Rogues (Jet, Wave, and Storm) and other anthropomorphic birds are descendants of the Babylonian aliens, and just like Chao and Chaos are descendants of the Ancients.

The Lost Hex, much like Little Planet, could be a small celestial body inhabited by the Zeti, but it was destroyed, leaving some of them trapped in the remaining fragments while others stayed on Earth’s surface and eventually became Koopas.

😉 I know that both Bowser and Zavok have spiked bracelets, horns, giant final boss forms, and even defeats where they sink into lava.

That’s why I wanted to connect them somehow.

Just a reminder that I imagine these things purely for fun, so have fun with me and feel free to share your own ideas and interpretations on this topic.
