FAFSA Disqualification due to On Paper vs Reality Custodial Arrangement

Short version is son is over 18 now and tried to get FAFSA loans. Ex and I are joint managing conservators and on paper had a 50-50 custody split when he was under 18. In reality, I was the sole parent and received zero support. I paid 100% of expenses. We did not realize dad's income would be counted towards FAFSA due to the split custody. Son does not qualify for loans since dad makes so much money. Dad stated will give $0 for college. Are we doing something wrong? Other avenues? Any advice?

**Update**

Electrical fire confirmed. Kitchen in the back of the store. The power is cut to that section of the store, but the rest of the store is still operating.

Once the fire was contained, the employees went back to work.

Son is an employee. Building evac’d. Firefighters on scene. Early guess is an electrical fire.
