STC worried about transition after Jan 2027 how realistic is ETC or HQ move?
Hi everyone, looking for advice from people with experience at the World Bank, especially those who started as STCs and later transitioned internally.
for context: I am currently working as an STC on a project in a country office
Recently I was reminded that by January next year there may not be STC opportunities anymore (or at least that my current arrangement may not continue), and honestly it made me pretty anxious about long-term prospects.
What’s making me confused is that people around the office do not really seem to talk about it openly, so I’m not sure if I’m worrying too early, if everyone already has a plan, or if this is just something people quietly deal with.
I’m trying to understand what realistic pathways exist from here:
How difficult is it to transition from STC to ETC in a country office?
What actually helps secure an ETC position? Performance? Networking? Team needs? Timing?
How early should I start preparing?
Is moving from a country office STC position to HQ realistic?
Does having a US master's degree (especially from a DC-based university) make any meaningful difference internally, or is experience and internal exposure much more important?
I know there probably isn’t a universal answer, but I’d really appreciate hearing experiences from people who have gone through this transition themselves.
