I’m a Tax Analyst at EY and honestly, I’m not enjoying the work overall. I was on the bench for about 6 months, and 2 months ago I got assigned to a client team. They trained me, but the team culture feels very toxic.
I’m engaged the entire day and working ~10–11 hours, but my chargeability is still low because instead of giving clear guidance, they ask me to “research” everything on my own. Since I’m new, I naturally take more time to complete tasks, which just adds to the stress.
Also, my team is based out of Bangalore and Hyderabad, so I don’t have anyone physically around me in my location, which makes things feel even more isolating.
On the other hand, there’s another client requirement where most of the team is in my location. From what I’ve heard, that team has a better work culture and people usually log off on time. I also know a few people there, so I feel like I’d have more support.
I’m thinking of talking to my counselor about switching teams, but I’m hesitant because:
I’ve already been trained for my current client
It might be difficult for them to replace me
I don’t want it to backfire if they inform my current team that I asked for a change
I obviously won’t say my team is toxic—I’d frame it around wanting better on-ground support and alignment with a team in my location.
I’m very new to corporate, so I’m not sure if raising this so early is a bad move.
Should I bring this up with my counselor, or just stick it out for now?
TL;DR:
New at EY, stuck in a stressful/toxic-feeling team with long hours and low chargeability + no local teammates. Another team in my location seems better. Should I ask my counselor for a switch, or could that backfire?
