Reaching the final battle with Strahd – looking for ideas, tips and experiences
Hi everyone!
After a long campaign, my group is finally approaching the end of our Curse of Strahd game, and next session they’ll most likely face Strahd for the final time.
The party consists of:
Level 12 Barbarian
Level 12 Rogue
Level 12 Paladin
Level 12 Cleric
Throughout the campaign each character received a Dark Gift from the Amber Temple. Mechanically, these work as a sort of “ultimate ability” that can be activated once per day for 1 minute, mostly providing additional combat power and damage.
The players have also gathered several allies during the campaign:
The Martikovs
A group of Vistani
Some citizens/allies from Vallaki
Recently Strahd invited them to his wedding with Ireena. The party realized that this is likely their only chance to enter Castle Ravenloft with the gates open and finally attempt to kill him.
My current plan for the final battle is divided into three phases:
Phase 1 – The Raid
The party and their allies assault Castle Ravenloft.
Instead of fighting Strahd immediately, they face many of his lieutenants and servants:
Rahadin
Escher
The Brides
Vampire Spawn
Other castle defenders
The goal is to create the feeling of a full-scale assault on the castle before reaching Strahd himself.
Phase 2 – The Hunt
Once Strahd joins the fight, he does not stand still.
I want to play him as an intelligent predator:
Hit-and-run tactics
Using walls, ceilings and mobility
Splitting the party
Separating weaker characters
Fighting on his own terms
Essentially a long chase through Castle Ravenloft rather than a traditional boss fight.
Phase 3 – Final Confrontation
Eventually Strahd gathers the party in a large chamber and magically seals the exits.
At this point he unveils a new ability inspired by Domain Expansions from Jujutsu Kaisen.
Inside this domain:
The battlefield becomes extremely hostile
The environment works against the players
Strahd gains new advantages and abilities
This is intended to be the true final showdown: Strahd versus the four PCs.
A few questions:
What are your thoughts on this structure?
Have any of you run a memorable final Strahd fight and what worked well?
How did you make Strahd threatening against a high-level party?
Did you give him additional spells, legendary actions, mythic phases, or custom abilities?
My goal is for the battle to be:
Difficult
Cinematic
Memorable
Worthy of a campaign finale
I’d love to hear any ideas, mechanics, homebrew abilities, or lessons learned from your own campaigns.
Thanks!
