Oil in the air intake chamber? EJ253
Hey guys,
my 2005 Outback 2.5 (EJ253) is consuming nearly 1L of 5W30 every 1000 km, depending on how i drive, so I started looking for where the oil is going.
There are no visible leaks, and the head gaskets were replaced about a year ago.
The car also randomly throws a P0420 code again (catalyst efficiency below threshold - and yes, the oxygen sensor was also replaced a year ago 😃 )
Today I checked the 2 hoses connected to the intake chamber (I assume they are part of the PCV system) and noticed there is engine oil inside them, a small drop was dripping out when i pulled the hose off.
So now I'm wondering:
- Is some oil inside these hoses normal on an EJ253?
- Or should the intake side be completely dry?
- Could excessive blowby / a bad PCV valve be responsible for the high oil consumption and maybe even the P0420 code?
The engine still runs fine overall, no blue smoke whatsoever , but the oil consumption is getting pretty annoying. And you can smell something disgusting, i guess its burned oil, when you stop. Even on the highway i started smelling what i think was burned oil.
Any EJ253 experience would be appreciated 😅
