More US Senators Co-Sponsor the Falun Gong Protection Act
Senator Adam Schiff [D-CA] has co-sponsored S.4009, the Falun Gong and Victims of Forced Organ Harvesting Protection Act, on June 1, bringing forward this important legislation that aims to end the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) brutality against Falun Gong practitioners.
U.S. Senators Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Jeff Merkley (D-OR) have introduced bipartisan legislation, S.4009, aimed at addressing forced organ harvesting in China.
The bill seeks to sanction individuals and organisations involved in forced organ harvesting, including freezing U.S.-based assets, banning entry into the United States, revoking visas, and blocking immigration benefits.
It also requires the U.S. government to investigate China’s organ transplant system, including the persecution of prisoners of conscience such as Falun Gong practitioners, the source of organs used in transplants, transplant wait times, and whether U.S. funding has supported transplant research in China.
The legislation defines forced organ harvesting as the removal of organs through coercion, abduction, deception, fraud, abuse of power, or exploitation of vulnerable people.
This follows years of concern from human rights groups and findings from the 2019 China Tribunal, which concluded that forced organ harvesting from prisoners of conscience has taken place in China on a large scale, with Falun Gong practitioners identified as one of the main victim groups.
Supporters say the bill reflects growing international pressure to hold the Chinese Communist Party accountable for serious human rights abuses and to help stop forced organ harvesting.
