Medication Failure
I was diagnosed with IIH with stenosis through MRI about 1 year ago. The first 6 months I took Diamox 500mg twice a day. My symptoms improved and my eye exam showed improvement. The next 6 months, while on the same dose of Diamox, my symptoms returned and my eye exam showed ‘no improvement’. The Neuro ophthalmologist ordered a slow taper of Topamax, which almost killed me and my relationship! I was only on it 2 weeks and was having panic attacks, thoughts of doom and was VERY irritated, so I stopped it (although my iih symptoms improved greatly in just 2 weeks!)
My doc doesn’t want to give me a higher dose of Diamox, stating he doesn’t “think it’ll work”. He also didn’t recommend any other medications. He wants me to see an interventional radiologist for a lumbar puncture and possible stent. Has anyone had this happen where an increase in Diamox wasn’t suggested/recommended? I’m curious because I’ve seen posts of people on 4000 milligrams a day.
MRI results: Mildly enlarged bilateral optic nerve sheaths and partially empty sella, which may represent idiopathic intracranial hypertension in the setting of chronic headaches.
