I can't tell if this is useful to work. I'm not working with a pattern, just freehanding. Is it curving too much? Or will it even out some once i get a couple rows in?

(If it matters, I want to make a square/long square, then wrap it around the hand and sew along the side to make it a sort of fingerless mitten)

Trying to learn foundation HDC and the knots are not playing nice.

Hi all. I've begun teaching myself FHDC with the aim of crocheting in the round.

I tie the wool around the hook. Tighten it up some. Begin chaining. And every time so far, the wool is forming this ugly pointy lumpy thing.

I've tried chaining two and working in the first chain I made. Chained three and worked in the first chain I made. One youtuber I saw had this lovely neat... beginning point. So clearly it can be done.

Once I get going on the foundation it's OK but then when I go to join in the round, I do my slip stitch and it's all wonky and lopsided.

What am I doing wrong?
