New front-end worker at Woolworths: Is this normal?

Hey all,

I just started at Woolworths in front end (only done a couple shifts so far). During quiet times I usually ask the assistant manager if there’s anything else I can do.

He basically said to just take it easy for now since I’m still new and in high school. He told me to stay on checkout, maybe do some light cleaning, and not worry about doing too much yet. He even said that just being there and available on checkout is already considered working, so I don’t need to feel like I have to be doing something all the time.

I understand where he’s coming from, but I feel a bit weird just standing there while other team members look busy doing other things. I’d rather be doing something and learning more.

Is this normal for your first few shifts?

Also, I’m keen to learn things like self-serve or online orders. What’s the best way to ask for more tasks or training without coming off pushy?

Thanks
