What About Chit Funds ?

Are chit funds a reliable source of either taking loans or as a investment tool ?

I want to understand the problems why people doesn't do chit funds much. Is it coz of high comission 5% of foreman ? Is the reliability an issue ? Is the interest of loan or savings not competitive? Or something else ?
