Prophetic power in the Book of Mormon

Listening to the latest LDS discussion podcast, and seeing how bad at discerning anything the Mormon profits are, I was wondering why God stopped telling his profits anything anymore.

In the Book of Mormon, Alma is revealed enemy strategies in war, so they can beat the lamanites, Nephi (in the book of helamen) tells them who committed a murder and how they can solve it. All the prophets knew the end of the Book of Mormon, and knew everything about the founding of the United States, down to very intricate details of Columbus sailing over here.

And now, instead of the church prophesying things, they are putting out ensign articles about what members get wrong about prophets and how they are just powerless men. So how does the church reconcile these things, God is the same yesterday, today and forever.
