Reason of buying and latency check

Hi all!

A few days ago I went out and bought a PS Portal, even though I never really imagined myself owning one.

A little backstory first. About a year ago, I met a girl who lives around 700 km away from me. I have a job that allows me to work remotely, although I still need to travel to the office from time to time. Now, one year later, I’ve moved in with her, but whenever I need to visit the office I stay at a friend’s place nearby.

I’ve had a PS5 since launch, but lately I just haven’t had the same amount of time to play anymore, so I gave it to my stepson, who was incredibly happy about it. The original plan was, and still is, to eventually buy a PS5 Pro. The problem right now is space. Our current place is smaller, and since my home office is also there, I have even less room for a proper gaming setup. Sure, I could connect a PS5 to my work monitors, but they aren’t 4K, they’re not OLED, and they’re 21:9 ultrawide monitors.

Since I spend so many hours working in front of a computer, buying an OLED monitor never really felt like a smart option because of the burn in risk.

After thinking about how to solve all of this for a long time, the PS Portal suddenly started to make sense to me. So I bought one, and honestly, I’m both happy and a little disappointed at the same time.

Pros:

  • I can play while traveling for work
  • I can play in bed after my girlfriend falls asleep instead of just scrolling on my iPad or phone
  • I can stream from my stepson’s PS5 once he’s asleep
  • I can basically play almost anywhere
  • Cloud streaming works even without having access to a PS5
  • Small and convenient

Cons:

  • The speed/latency could definitely be better. I have a 1000/1000 Mbit connection at home, yet the Portal only seems to use around 5 to 10 Mbit. I’ve read about this, and it’s honestly crazy that Sony appears to limit it to around 5 to 15 Mbit.
  • I definitely miss having 120 Hz and the OLED experience

But overall, as you can see, there are way more positives than negatives for me, and I still feel like it was a really good purchase.

So what was your reason? And what is your experience with cloud streaming latency vs ps5 remote play latency?
