I think my gums are receding but my dentist says they look good. Should I get a second opinion?

I think my gums have started receding because I've started using clear aligners. I'm very early into using them but I've noticed my gums changing more than my teeth. I think more of the teeth are clearly exposed, especially my front bottom teeth. I asked my dentist about it, and he says they look good. I'm not sure if I'm being paranoid or if I should get a second opinion or seek alternative care.

How bad is my gum recession?

I’ve been noticing my gums receding a bit. I asked my dentist about it at my last cleaning and he said they were fine. I find that hard to believe, especially the front bottom teeth. Should I get a second opinion?

How bad is my gum recession?

I've been using aligners on my teeth and I'm already noticing gum recession. I asked about it in my last appointment and my provider said my gums look fine. This simply can't be true. My gum line looks so much lower with more of the teeth exposed. How bad is it?

First photo is current.

I’m 39 and I don’t take any medication besides BC.

Dentist wants me to take antibiotics to assess if I need root canal

A month ago, I developed intermittent throbbing in my central incisor. I went into my provider and he assessed that the throbbing was a result of the tooth being stubborn and resisting the movement. My x-ray was completely fine. I got a second opinion and they assessed the same. My dentist then rescanned me to adjust my plan for slower movement. He then put me in a passive retainer to stabilize my tooth while we await new trays. For a few days the throbbing subsided. However, it soon returned. I got another scan and things still looked fine. Roots looked good.

My dentist then said that it’s possible that the infection is too early to show up on imaging. He wants me to start antibiotics. His assessment is that if my tooth feels better on antibiotics, then there is an early infection and we should proceed to a root canal. I got a second opinion from an endontist and she advised against a root canal and assessed that tooth is aggravated from movement. She gave me a CBCT scan, radiographs, and pulp vitality test

Has anyone ever encountered this approach? I’m hesitant to agree to a root canal without imaging proof of an infection.

I'm currently on tray 13/44. My treatment had been going really well until this tray. I felt the typical pressure you feel on the first day or so of a new tray. But towards the end of this tray, my central incisor started throbbing and was also accompanied by some sinus pressure/pain. Tylenol helped a bit and I also had relief when I took my tray out for a little bit. I alerted my dentist and he had me come in to get it checked out. (Yes, a dentist. I know this sub will flame me for going with a dentist over an ortho, but I feel like I trusted my dentist's expertise when I started this journey.) His assessment was that this tray was too much movement for this tooth and we needed to adjust my plan and slow down the movement. So I got rescanned on Thursday and now I'm waiting for my new aligners to arrive.

It's been a few days since then and the throbbing has been up and down. Yesterday I didn't feel it at all, but this morning, it came back. My dentist didn't seem alarmed that there might be a bigger issue and that adjusting my plan would be the fix. But obviously I'm really anxious about this.

  1. Has anyone experienced anything like this before?

  2. I'm starting to wonder if I need to get a second opinion from an ortho or another dentist. I'm spiraling, and I'm not sure if my dentist isn't alarmed because there's nothing to be alarmed about or if he's not properly treating my issue.
