Entitled Old guy thought I was to fast, wouldn't pay me!

I am beyond frustrated.

This isn’t a long story, but there is some backstory I need to give.

Currently, I live in an off-grid community in far northern Ontario.

I have multiple sclerosis, so things can get difficult, but I make it work. I get zero government support, so I live on a shoestring budget — just enough, really, to feed myself.

I don’t have a car, and I legally can’t drive, but I do have a bicycle. In the area, I’ve posted on our local board offering general helper/handyman services. I keep my rates fair: $30 per call for a minimum of one hour.

I got a call today from a place literally a 10-minute ride down the road. He asked if I knew how to set up a cellular signal booster because he had just gotten one and it wasn’t working (which is necessary this far up north). I said I could take a look and asked him to send me a picture.

I immediately knew what he had done wrong, so I jumped on my bicycle and brought my cable strippers and crimping tool.

When I got there and said hello, the guy was basically pulling his hair out in frustration. The issue was simple: the data cable from the receiver to the transmitter had a snapped connector nub. I stripped the cable at the top, put the connector back on, crimped it, plugged everything in, and right away it worked. It took all of five minutes.

Now here’s why I’m mad...

He said, “Well, that was easy,” when I finished so quickly, then took out his wallet and handed me $5.

We had agreed on the phone to $30, but because it only took five minutes, that’s apparently all he thought it was worth.

Man, I need that money so I don’t starve. I tried to argue my point, but he’s a stubborn old bastard who crossed his arms and said no. Man, I can’t even get a bag of apples for $5

I was so insulted that I threw the money back at him and said, “Keep your bullshit, and don’t call me again.”

So yeah... I’m not happy.

EDIT: I need to clarify this person isint part of our community... the community I live Is small we pitch in to help eachoter alot.

This guy was down the highway a house with power

Edit: I am way up north. It's very rual. I'm getting a lot of comments about getting paid up front..... it just doesn't work that way up here.

Now I don't get calls often if I'm lucky 3 times a month, usually like 1..... that being said, why do I charge so little?

It's a lot of older people and people on fixed income. All I'm trying to do is make a little extra for groceries and not charge people who can't afford it to death
