[Systems Engineer] [North Texas] - $175,000
I am taking a pay cut for stability, and it hurts the ego but I think it is the right choice for stress and my life. Figured I would share my full work history and SS data for the opinion of strangers on the internet.
I changed jobs this month and the market is rough, but for certain skills and the right companies, you can still make some good money.
For what is worth I am 34 years old and consider my area to be MCOL.
I know software engineers are always posting crazy money, but I do zero software and still turned out alright. #TeamHardware.
While I do agree that jumping companies is the only way to make good money and stay with the market, I do think there are downsides. I got some crazy opportunities and experience only afforded to me cause i was at the same place for 10 years, even though that experience cost me quite a bit of salary.
I strongly believe those experience are the reason why I was able to make and sustain a significant jump in income. Also covid definitely broke everything as far as to what people are worth and what companies were willing to pay. Seems crazy now but $63k felt pretty great back in 2014 as a single dude. Now it wouldn't feel too good.
Even though i was at Company 2 for over 2 years, Company 3 still asked about it and looked at it as "short tenure" and I felt like they perceived it as a risk I had to explain/mitigate.
Happy to answer any questions. AI may take my job eventually but not anytime soon.
