Career switch into IT / OT infrastructure from industrial printing – how would recruiters view this background?
Hi everyone,
I’m currently working in pharmaceutical packaging production as a printing operator in Germany and also worked part-time in IT support / junior IT project coordination.
My IT-related tasks include:
- Windows & Mac workstation setup
- VPN and local server support
- Printer management
- 1st & 2nd level support
- Helping with cloud migration tasks
Starting June 1st, I’ll be changing jobs into a more technical role within the printing and production industry with additional responsibilities around coordination, technical communication, workflows and customer-related processes.
At the same time, I’ve started building foundational skills in:
- Linux
- Networking / TCP-IP
- Docker
- Python
- Git/GitHub
- MQTT
- Homelab projects
I also have a broad interest in technology overall. Recently I started learning about PLC programming and industrial automation, which I find extremely interesting as well.
I’m also considering starting a degree in applied computer science while continuing to work.
Long-term I’m interested in infrastructure, OT / industrial IT, automation and possibly DevOps in industrial environments.
What I’m trying to understand is:
- How would recruiters view a profile like this?
- What would be the biggest red flags?
- What would make this profile more credible for junior infrastructure / OT roles?
- Would hands-on projects help more than certifications at this stage?
- Would a degree significantly improve my chances in this field?
I’d really appreciate honest feedback from a recruiting perspective.
