Last night, I experienced something that completely shattered my trust in the “emergency system” of one of India’s premier institutes — IIT (BHU), varanasi.
Around night time, while returning to my hostel from the lab, a speeding car hit me near the hostel area. I fell hard on the road. My leg got deeply injured, blood was flowing continuously, and for a few moments I genuinely did not understand what had just happened.
Some students rushed to help me. They somehow lifted me, brought me inside the hostel, and tried to stop the bleeding with Dettol and basic first aid while calling the campus ambulance.
But what happened after that was more painful than the accident itself.
Even after telling the IIT BHU Control room my name, hostel name, and room number, they repeatedly kept asking for my mobile number while I was bleeding badly. It felt like formalities were more important than the condition of the patient.
Then the ambulance arrived.
Instead of rushing an injured student to the hospital, the ambulance driver refused to start the ambulance until paperwork was completed. Yes - while blood was still flowing from my leg, they insisted: “First fill the form.”
They even said: "If the ambulance starts, you won’t be able to write on the paper, because pen will shaking on paper in moving ambulance."
At that moment, my friend was filling forms while I sat there bleeding.
But the worst part was still waiting.
After reaching the Trauma Centre, BHU, the ambulance staff simply dropped us (throw us) outside emergancy ward and tried to leave immediately. No stretcher. No support. No help in taking an injured patient inside the emergency ward. Nothing...!!!!!
We kept asking them where they were going, but their behavior clearly showed they did not care. It felt like they knew nobody would question them. Like the system protects them no matter how insensitive or irresponsible they behave.
Helpless and shocked, me and my friend somehow managed to enter the emergency ward ourselves.
And then another reality hit.
I waited nearly 40 minutes just for dressing of an actively bleeding wound because there was only ONE dresser managing countless patients throughout the night. Even he looked exhausted and helpless.
This is not just my story. This is the reality of the emergency response system that students are expected to depend upon.
An ambulance delayed treatment over paperwork. Emergency staff abandoned an injured student outside the hospital. And an overcrowded emergency ward struggled with almost no manpower.
If this can happen inside IIT (BHU) and BHU Trauma Centre, imagine the condition elsewhere.
I am posting this because silence only protects failed systems.
Students deserve safety. Patients deserve humanity. And emergency care should NEVER depend on paperwork before treatment.
