€4195 insurance premium for used Toyota Corolla

I was looking at a used Toyota Corolla Estate, 2019, for about €18,000. I checked insurance premium from GMIB, and they quoted premium of €4195. Here is my situation:

  1. Have a driving license not recognised by Ireland
  2. Looking to buy a car on my international driving license, and then planning to apply for Irish driving license when I get the car

. As per the rules, I am allowed to drive in Ireland for 12 months after I come here as a resident. I was planning to drive freely during this time, and then get a license.

It’s just insane how high this number is, about one fourth of the entire car price for one year premium. Is there any way I can get a reasonable premium, or should I just ditch my car buying plan and get an Irish DL instead?

Electric or hybrid

I have a hard budget of €30,000, and I am confused if electric makes more sense or hybrid. My workplace has electric chargers but not home, but I can get the car charged every week at the office.

In this budget, I can get a very good old electric car, 2022+, like Kia EV6 or Hyundai Ioniq 5, or a hybrid like Hyundai Tucson, Toyota Corolla. I am confused how I should choose. I like to keep my car for longer, 5 years at minimum, but might have to sell it earlier as well if I decide to immigrate back. I am an immigrant. How should I make this decision?
