Car recommendation?

I am looking for a new (to me) car. Want something reliable, nothing too big to drive cause im a bit of a shit parker. Probably petrol because I drive about 10000km/year at the moment. I currently share a Nissan leaf teckna with my fiance but I hate driving electric. We live with his parents so cant home charge. Its a pain in the arse and I cant even get to my parents and back on a single charge (they like about 1hr from me). Price range would be up to about 8k.

Windscreen claim again?

Hi all, I had my windscreen replaced for a deep chip last August with my old insurance provider. Was my only claim and didn't affect my NCB. Renewed my insurance with a new provider in March and my windscreen has cracked again from a stone chip.
If I claimed through my new insurer now would it affect my NCB ? I don't know whether to just get it done myself or claim

Used car? Change your pollen filter.

To anyone that’s buying a used car, I highly recommend getting a new cabin/pollen filter straight away.

These are two of the rougher ones I’ve changed out recently. The filter itself is typically around the €10 mark and takes all of 5 minutes to swap out yourself, often without any tools at all. Very handy DIY job and guarantees you’re not breathing years worth of dust, leaves etc.

For some reason, it seems to be a skipped over service item in a lot of garages.

New battery

Not sure if this is the right place for this or not but I'll put it up anyway.

I brought my car to the local mechanic today because my battery kept being drained and constantly needed a jump start when ever I wanted to drive

Little back story bought a 2010 Chevy Aveo in October 2025 for €1200, drives really nicely, but in February of this year the battery was dead one of the mornings going to work, so I bought a new battery for around €70 at local parts place and all was well until about 2 weeks ago. I asked neighbours and family members to help jump my car when needed but planned to go mechanic anyways.

Back to today; brought the car to the mechanic this morning and we thought it was gonna be a drain or faulty alternator or whatever cant exactly remember. Left it with him for a few hours and I got a call back from him saying that the car was fine didnt find any issues with it but when he checked the battery he said it failed the test he had done on it and it was a cheap dud of a battery, he didn't recognise the brand and I should go back to where I bought the battery because it should at least have a 12 month warranty on it.

So now I'm thinking I'm definitely gonna bring the battery back to where I bought it and try and get a replacement. I want to get a better brand of battery but I don't know much is an alright amount to pay and how much is too much to pay.

I've seen prices on a certain franchise of auto parts and batteries can be €180 plus.

Any advise is welcome

Tldr: I need a new car battery and I don't know how much I should be paying for one

Market Rant !!

Looking at cars and seeing a lot of low KM volvo S60 in dealerships sort of in the range of 15k to 20k for the last gen between '14 & '18.

Filtering for private sales and people are asking the same often with twice the miles.

What is going on

Jdm auction watch question

Hi all,

I've been in contact with JDMAW a few weeks back RE importing a car. The price they quoted was high pre vrt, as expected in this market but then one of the lads at work mention getcars, the Japanese website they use.

So I set up an account with them (getcars) out of morbid curiosity and the two hybrids I was looking at have a significantly cheaper avg sale price even when including the charges on their website, the duty and vat, by nearly 45% !!!

I know there is a fee and all but has anyone had an experience with bidding using JDMAW ??
Like should I throw in a bid on their site at a lower price based off the getcars metric and see what happens ?

For context the quote JDMAW gave me has no breakdown

When I bought the giulietta vs now . 1.4T 170hp

It’s been a great 5 years of ownership , the biggest thing I’d recommend to any owner is to replace that front grill with a black hex instead . Was a huge change in how it looks .

“Mod” list :
Aftermarket back box exhaust
Ram air , cold air intake
Lowered on springs
Billstein shock absorbers
Aftermarket wheels
Front grill
Front splitter
And I replaced the badges as they were worn

Haven’t done anything major but for me I feel I’ve transformed the car into something I really enjoy !

JDM import camper van as first car?

Basically I'm sick of paying rent and I'm exploring options for my first purchase, I hear that the JDM imports are cheap and are well looked after.

the condition is important given I'm going to be living in it so I don't want my home to be in the garage regularly as that would negate the savings on rent. Any help or insight is appreciated!

Potential higher SUV taxes?

Just want to get people's opinions of potential higher SUV Taxes? I'm on the fence of thinking of getting myself an SUV (something like a Dacia Duster, Kia Sportage, Hyundai Tucson, Toyota RAV 4 or Skoda Karoq etc.) But one of the reasons I've stayed away is I seem to always see article's and people online saying SUVs should have way higher Taxes due to their size and emissions compared to other class of cars like Saloons and hatchback. So I'm wondering how likely could these Taxes come to fruition in the future?

Before anyone starts I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with these articles I'm merely asking people thoughts on future SUV Taxes may look like? I'm honestly not mad about SUVs myself however, my girlfriend is pregnant, we have a little dog who I wouldn't trust near the baby but needs to be transported as well so i need some space between the two of them and she also suffers from major back problems, hips etc. I have a 2010 Hyundai i30 which she says is very uncomfortable however, the odd time I pick her up in my work van she says its so much more comfortable on her back compared to my car. So my theory is an SUV might sort out all my "problems" but I'd be fairly sick if I get an SUV then next the Taxes sky rocket on them. We also live rural enough traverse to a big enough town so not like I'd be in a big SUV in the center of a congested city.

Thanks.

Cones to save parking space in front house

A common sight in these small residential streets in Dublin. What are people’s thoughts should people be placing cones on the public street which should be available to park on as the public pay road tax. Or should they reserve this public road in front their house. That custom printed sign on the cone says ‘parking for house no “..” only’ which I found quite funny they even reserved their house number

TIL: You cannot wash your car at the petrol station before 8 am

Hi folks, this one baffled me. I wanted to wash and clean my car on my own using the manual car wash points available at one of the 24 hr petrol stations. The idea was to do it before work in the morning. At around 7.30 am, parked up, tried tapping my card at the spot but it was temporarily declined. Went in to the shop and I was told it won’t be available until 8 am. Went to another station nearby and was told the same thing except when I asked why, I was told it was because of the neighbours. Is this true across the country?

Motor tax for Japanese imports

Hi all, long one here but please let me know if anyone has heard of this!

Has anyone else had experience buying a Japanese imported vehicle from a dealer in Ireland?

I was the first person to tax the car in Ireland and have seen it in a higher band than the EU/IE/UK verson of the exact same car

Queried with revenue and the car was tested using a Japanese JC08 emissions test, whereas Ireland is using NEDC

Revenue has said JC08 and NEDC are "comparable" when they clearly are not

They said they'll reduce my motor tax if I get a VIN specific email from VW stating my emissions in NEDC, which is impossible to obtain as the car was only tested with Japans JC08 method

VW confirms my model of car emissions in NEDC but they cant say its specific to my VIN so revenue won't accept it

I feel stuck. Does revenue say both methods are "comparable" just so they can get a little extra money on the imports? I've complained but get the same "comparable" nonsense when it's clearly not

Strange layer on side window - car imported from Japan

Hi everyone. Has anyone come across something like this before?

I have a car imported from Japan and there is a strange layer on the side window, as shown in the photos. It is not a scratch - it looks more like some kind of coating, residue, or after tint on the glass.

I have tried cleaning products, but it does not come off. I also brought it to a tinting service in Cork, but they were not able to remove it either.

Does anyone know what this could be? Maybe some kind of adhesive residue or something common on Japanese imports?

Most importantly, does anyone know how to remove it safely without damaging the glass, or can recommend someone in Ireland who deals with this kind of issue?

Thanks in advance for any advice. Photos attached

Would a BMW 520d M Sport like this be reliable?

Starting to browse cars and was considering an Audi A4/A5, but saw this and I'm wondering whether something like this might be better value and more reliable?
