Update - original post below. Dog went in for sedation aspiration 4/21 and a mass was discovered in her vulva. Testing showed positive for TVT. Starting chemo next week due to small margins.

Dog has 4 4 month old puppies who are also in foster care. How high is their risk for TVT? Dog also had bloody discharge for weeks. Would the discharge spread TVT to other dogs? They didn't lick it but were in outdoor areas at different times.

Female dog bloody discharge before and after spay

I'm fostering a female dog who was formerly a stray in New Caney TX. She's 37 pounds, heartworm positive, estimated 1 year 8 months possible lab/hound mix. She had puppies while she was a stray. A resident caught 4 puppies around 8 weeks of age but mama dog was more elusive. Dog is happy and acts normal. Pups were around 10 weeks old on 2/24/2026 when mom dog was caught. She had swelling and discharge that resembled symptoms of heat. It seemed early for another heat but the vet (vet A) she saw said it was possible on 3/2/2026 exam.

Spayed 4/1/2026 by vet A. On release, vet tech said they noticed bloody discharge, but it didn't appear that she was in heat during spay surgery.

4/7/2026 examined by partner vet vet B due to continued bloody discharge. Cytology sent to IDEXX. I have not received results. Deracoxib and clavamox prescribed. Upon digital exam doctor stated that it felt thickened like when a dog has a prolapsed uterus. She has no uterus. Vet B took dog out of exam room for digital exam by vet A

4/14/2026 follow up exam with vet A who performed spay surgery. Continuing discharge. Instructed to continue clavamox and deracoxib and return in one week. Vet stated possible reaction to sutures. I don't think that's it since discharge started before surgery. His other option is to "open her up" and see what's going on but he said that would be a bigger incision and more sutures.

She has another follow up on 4/21/2026 and symptoms are unchanged. I really don't want to do exploratory surgery if there is another option.

Any advice or ideas would be greatly appreciated.
