I completed a 10-day observation period and now I'm unsure whether to accept the job
I recently applied for a job at a psychology/mental health clinic. They told me that before deciding whether I wanted to join, I would have to complete 10 days of observation.
I completed the 10 days, but during that time I mostly just sat and observed. I wasn't really taught how to conduct counselling sessions or given much opportunity to interact with clients. I was mainly told to observe and not talk much.
Because of this experience, I'm now questioning myself and wondering if I'm actually good enough to work as a psychologist. At the same time, I have realized that I feel much more comfortable working with children. I don't know if adult counselling is something I want to do, or whether I simply don't feel ready because I haven't had proper training or supervised practice.
Now I'm confused about what to do. They are expecting me to decide whether I want to join after the observation period, but I don't think I want to accept the job.
I'm also worried about how to say no after they allowed me to spend 10 days observing there. I don't want to seem ungrateful or make them feel that I wasted their time.
How should I politely decline the job? And is it normal to realize after an observation period that a particular type of psychology work isn't suitable for you?
