To my understanding crabitats don't really have the soil conditions for the bugs needed to create a living ecosystem. But I am curious if anyone here has created a vivarium for their crabs and how/what that would like and what their experience has been.
I read online that if one smells a fishy smell (during the time a crab has buried itself) that it may have died. For context I was gifted a crab for my birthday and in that moment that I had gotten them I rushed to get a proper habitat going, and in that time one of my crabs buried itself. Now 2 weeks later there is a very light fishy smell, but I don't know if it's the salt water or damp sand I'm smelling (or something else). I don't want to dig up the crab in the case of hurting/ruining it's molting process.
I am aware that crabs can remain buried for months at a time, so I'm not sure if I should let the crab sit there for another while longer and wait for it to really reek or if I should dig him up now.
