Food aggression?

I was looking at crab video from last night and caught this interaction that looks like aggression between two of my crabs around the food dish. I’m not sure why. Both of these crabs were adopted from the same previous owner - they know each other and I’ve had them for a while now without issues that I know of. I just put them and one other crab in a new bigger crabitat a few weeks ago (maybe that’s part of it) but they’ve seemed really happy in the new one. It’s way more room than needed for three crabs; there’s a whole lot of shells in there, food, two deep pools, plenty of climbing and hiding opportunities. Can they get territorial about food? I’ll try putting multiple dishes in there so there’s more options for now.

Substrate question

If this sand an all in one? Or should I still take some of the echo earth in the tank and mix it 5:1 ?
Thanks

Tank Sizing?

Ok so I’ve been interested in getting a hermit crab and upon researching, ive found a lot of people have more vertical space for their crabs rather than horizontal. Currently, i only have a 10 gallon tank from when i kept fish and it’s been sitting collecting dust. how beneficial would it be if instead on keeping the tank horizontal, i flip it vertically so the crabs have more space? i can create a custom panel for the front of course. but what are your thoughts?

Group burrowing?

My ex abandoned her 4 (possibly 3 at this point) crabs with me. They're typically above ground more than not. Of course, as soon as I get permission to actually get rid of them, they ALL go under. Food and water untouched for like almost a month.

Obviously I know about molting, but is this something that's ever done as a group? There's been no changes to the tank, and the only difference in the out-of-tank environment is higher temps in the house, from 65ish during the winter to 74 now that it's summer, but that's never bothered them before.

Carl has emerged from his slumber!

He's a little sandy and very ravenous! I got him some black soldier fly larvae while he was buried, so he was excited to see some new protein!

Can’t heat tank

New hermit crab owner.

I have a 40 gallon tank with 8 inches of substrate and a glass top. I got an 18.5 x8.5 inch tikaton heating pad on the back of the tank set to like 95 degrees but I can’t seem to get the tank above 75. The house has AC set to 71 degrees. I recently put diy cardboard with tin foil on the sides but it doesn’t seem to have made any difference.

Do I need an under tank heater? I read those can be dangerous. Do I need another heating pad for one of the sides?

New Tank

I'm new to hermit crabs and I was looking for some advice on my new tank, specifically on things I need to add or stuff like that.

When should i be worried?

brought home two hermit crabs two weeks ago and the more active one immediately switched shells. about 5 days ago the same, more active hermit crab burrowed and i haven’t seen him since. my questions are

how long can molting take and when should i start getting worried?

could the second hermit crab get lonely in that time?

are there any improvements i should make to their set up? (20 gallon aquarium with 1:5 sand/coconut fiber substrate, worm castings/ greensand, foraging, salt and freshwater, some climbing enrichment, complete meal and treats, egg shells for calcium, tiny dish with coconut oil)

i appreciate any help 😊

Been seeing a lot more posts about buying crabs

Admittedly I've only been on the sub about 8 months, but I'm noticing way more posts about people buying hermit crabs. Is this actually happening, or is my algorithm just acting up?

20 Gal Tank Tall or Horizontal

I've been planning on getting 2 purple pinchers and I've heard of the 10 gallons per crab rule, so I decided on a 20 gallon tank. However, I've been looking on Petsmart and the two options are either a longer 20 gallon tank with less vertical space or a taller 20 gallon tank with more vertical space and less horizontal space.

I was thinking of buying the taller version so that I could give them as much substrate as possible while also keeping room for climbing toys and their water bowls, but I was wondering if this is still enough room for both of them? 🤔

For reference, the taller version is 25 in L x 13.25 in D x 17.25 in H (63.5 cm in L x 33.655 cm in D x 43.815 cm in H)

The longer one is 30.5 in L x 13.13 in D x 13 in H (77.47 cm in L x 33.35 cm in D x 33 cm in H)

New to this need help/ advice

Hey yall. My wife really wanted to get our boys some hermit crabs as a pet. She went to a local pet store and grabbed what was recommended. Neither of us know anything about this. There are two crabs in the tank. One took to burying himself pretty quickly within about 15 minutes. The other one has been moving around for the last three hours. From what I read these heat lamps are not the best so I have a heat pad on the way from Amazon, a humidity monitor, and a tank light. I want these babies to be ok through the night and not sure what to do. Should I keep the lamp on? I keep my house at 68 degrees. Should I turn it off and turn on a regular light? I’m sorry I’m just lost and worried about them.

Is this a good shell size?

so i have 2 hermit crabs right now. they had been dug under the sand for a week if not more and my daughter came over and wanted to see them. i dug this one up and when u put in back in his tank he switched shells 😁😁😁😁😁 i know i see posts about them switching back and forth. he's been in this one all night til this morning and i was just wondering if this is a good size for him or if it's too big? and can i throw out his old shell? cause if this is a good size then i need a new one waaaaaayyy bigger for my other crab.

i’m upset

so a friend of a friend decided to impulse get 2 hermit crabs at a surf shop while at the beach the other day. and this is his tank…

she’s tried being nice while educating him, and she’s sent him some tiktok’s and just general information and he said he didn’t know any of what she was telling him and that he only read three things and it said nothing about any of what she was telling him. and i’m extremely upset. not to sound like a hermit crab warrior or whatever, but it’s just the idea that he went with it because he had no impulse control.

he has two hermit crabs in this traveling lizard tank, and he’s planning on getting another sometime soon. he didn’t know about them needing space to molt, and whatever that sheet is in the back (i’m assuming a climbing wall…?) isn’t real and i heard some people online and on tiktok said it smells like chemicals..? obviously i don’t know if that’s true or not but im just very upset.

this is also coming from the guy who got a 50 gallon fish tank for one of his birthdays a bit ago and consistently kept killing his fish because of his lack of knowledge. he did constant water changes which meant the tank never could balance, and he had no natural decorations, it was all plastic and pebble rock. he would probably go to petsmart or something like 5 times a week at “his peak” fish tank having time.

i know that i don’t have much power to stop him but im hoping him seeing people criticize his set up will hopefully motivate him…? so if anyone has any suggestions or advice or critiques for him please go ahead and say them.

-update 1: super quick i know. so he’s saying now that he “doesn’t intend on abusing them. i’m just very new to it. they’re very cute”. which obviously doesn’t negate the fact that even though they’ve only been in that tank for maybe a full day, it’s not a good habitat for them and may be stressing them out to some extent already.

-update 2: one of our mutual friends reached out to him because she used to have hermit crabs that she kept for years, but unfortunately had to rehome them when moving states. he asked her AND I QUOTE “is it true that they eat fruits and vegetables?” this is crazy

Gender reveal?

My buddy, Mister Handsome Hands, was being extra social today and I was able to get clear(ish) pics of their underside. Can anyone tell from the pics what gender Mister Handsome Hands is? I'm stumped.

What’s something you wish you knew before getting hermit crabs?

My hermit crab was given to me randomly for free so I didn’t have time to do research prior. They are living like royalty now but I wish someone would have told me HOW EXPENSIVE SHELLS ARE. And how expensive they are in general.
It’s crazy. Just paid $20 for 2 shells after searching for days to find some in her specific size because EVERY single shell shop was sold out.

Please help!

Newer hermit crab owner here. We've owned hermit crabs for about 3 months and sadly have lost two of our babies within the last month. Both were found out of their shells. One i found alive and tried to do the protocol for but he wouldn't re enter and the other I didn't catch in time because he was under the wheel and I couldnt see him :( its a 55 gal tank and stays at 89% humidity (its 79% in the pic because I had to move some stuff around in the tank to find and remove the dead crab) and ranges 77° F to 80° F for temp. Substrate is 7 in deep. The top of sand is dry but just under it is damp. Crabs do not come out very often. i have 2 who are sometimes active at night but most of them i rarely see. I always provide fresh food lots of protein, veggies, fruits, oils, etc. There are 4 small crabs in the tank currently. 2 under the sand and 2 above ground. No idea what the issue is but I dont want to lose more babies. please help! Not looking to get attacked I'm new to this and trying to make things better. Thank you!

How do I clean this?

It is a coconut hideout. Im adding a back wall to my crabitat and wanted to wash everything first. Also if anyone knows if I would need to wash off jackfruit leaves, they're prepackaged from zoo-med
