Magic

Magic

In my opinion, magic is currently underutilized as a game feature.

First off, I believe it would make the game more interesting if a creature of any sapient subspecies could use magic, or become a magician. To prevent overuse or overpowered societies, for non-originally magical species at least, magical abilities should be a non-toggle trait for an individual at birth (say 1 in 500 chance), or a similar trait gaining ability with mage interaction (like an apprentice, also at 1/500 chance).

Second, magic is absolutely useful in wartime, but apart from that, not so much. Logically the first thing any civilization would do upon discovering magic would be utilizing it to produce agricultural surpluses. Therefore, I believe a seperate description under the individual’s information should list if the individual is a magician or not, and still maintain a basic job. Though with magic, they would be a boon for their village. A magician-farmer or magician-miner could transform a poor/weak village into economically dominant one. This could also turn the tide in a war, without necessarily using magic in battle.

This tweak to magic would make mid-late games more interesting by introducing an aspect that could upend a world system, presenting a way for weaker powers to fight against dominant kingdoms, or for specific villages to remain stable and secure in the more turbulent ages.
