I quit getting encounters, like many others, and no mount of cleaning would get them working again. I finally decided to replace the metal ball with an SW-200D vibration sensor at the recommendation of u/gndres4686 and, while I was in there, I decided to throw in a 10k ohm rotary potentiometer to control the volume of that ridiculously harsh piezo speaker. Since I was removing the metal ball, I trimmed the enclosure for it to fit the rotary pot and hot glued it into place. Now, it's ever so gently playing the sounds of my people instead of screaming at me. Winning!
