▲ 2 r/Cubers
Five phases of learning a new algorithm.
Been learning full PLL this month, after a 9 year hiatus from cubing.
While learning the some of the algorithms I never got around to back then, I realised I could break down the learning process into 5 steps to keep track of progress. Here they are, all beginning with 'R' conveniently:
- Read - Can follow the written algorithm but has not yet memorised it.
- Remember - Can perform the algorithm while looking at the cube.
- Repeat - Can quickly complete the algorithm but has not incorporated it into a solve.
- Recognise - Takes a moment to spot the case then performs the moves consistently.
- Reflex - Immediately recognises the case and performs the algorithm with no hesitation.
So applying this to myself, my current progress looks like this:
- Ga, Gb, Gc, Gd (Haven't memories the algorithms yet)
- Ra, Rb, Na, Nb (Algorithms still don't feel natural)
- V, Aa, Ab, E (Fallback onto other algorithms when trying to solve quickly)
- F, Y, Ja (Case still takes more than a second to spot or occasionally mess up the moves)
- Ua, Ub, H, Z, T, Jb (Finger tricks are consistent and require little thought)
What do you think? Has anyone else felt this pattern emerge?
