What should I prioritize for MSc CS/AI: Italy with PoliMi/PoliTo or Japan with Osaka/Kyoto/Science Tokyo?
Hi everyone, I’m an CSE(Data Science) student looking for realistic advice for Master’s applications, mainly for Italy and Japan.
my_qualifications**:**
- B.Tech Computer Science with Data Science specialization
- CGPA: 8.25/10
- Expected graduation: May 2027
- Currently working/interning at CSIR-HQ
- Previous research internship at DRDO
- Finishing my research paper and submitting it this month only
- Projects mainly in ML/RL/CV/security:
- RLAIF / DPO / Constitutional AI alignment pipeline
- Reinforcement learning self-adaptive engine using PPO/QLoRA
- Secure computer vision / adversarial robustness project
- Hackathon winner + runner-up
- IELTS/TOEFL not taken yet, but I’m planning to prepare soon
Budget:
My original budget was around 15-20 lakh INR, but realistically I can stretch to 20-25 lakh INR max. I do not want to be delusional and apply somewhere where tuition/living cost will destroy the plan.
Main priorities:
- Politecnico di Milano
- Politecnico di Torino
- Japanese universities like Osaka University, Kyoto University, and maybe Science Tokyo / Tokyo Tech
- Practical Japanese backups like JAIST/NAIST/Tsukuba/Hokkaido if they make more sense financially
For Italy, I know about DSU/EDISU and that income-based scholarships can help Indian applicants if documents are prepared properly. I want to understand how realistic PoliMi/PoliTo are with my profile and budget.
For Japan, I know MEXT is very competitive, so I want to understand the other realistic routes:
- tuition waiver/exemption
- JASSO
- university/internal scholarships
- RA/TA support
- professor recommendation
- part-time work possibilities
Questions:
- With my profile, should I prioritize Italy or Japan?
- Is PoliMi realistic for me, or should PoliTo be my main target?
- For Japan, are Osaka/Kyoto/Science Tokyo realistic, or should I focus more on JAIST/NAIST/Tsukuba/Hokkaido?
- How hard is it actually to get tuition waiver/scholarship in Japan as a privately financed Indian student?
- Can part-time work realistically support living expenses in Italy or Japan, or should I assume zero income for the first few months?
- What should I improve before applying: CGPA, IELTS/TOEFL, research paper, professor emails, SOP, GitHub, or LORs?
I’m looking for honest feedback, especially from people who applied to Italy/Japan for CS/AI/Data Science or are already studying there. Please be blunt. I’d rather know the realistic route now than waste money applying badly.
