Am I getting fleeced?
So, over a week ago, I posted on here that I was having issues with my laptop's drive, it kept running out of space, that kinda thing. Everyone kept telling me that the problem was the drive, but I kept hoping against hope that there was another solution.
The next day, I decide to finally take it to a local computer repair place. This guy replaced my laptop's fan about three years back, so he seems reliable. A few days later the guy sends me a message saying that in addition to needing a larger drive, I also needed to replace my laptop's DC jack. I say ok, fine, go ahead, and he tells me yesterday to come pick it up.
I take it home, plug it in, turn it on, and it isn't charging. Today I brought it to the guy, he says he needs to run some tests but he thinks it's the battery. I come back a few hours later, he says yep, it's the battery, you gotta get a new one.
Now, it had been a while since I had had to charge the battery from like less than 80% all the way to 100%, I usually just leave it plugged in because if I ever get a problem like that, at least I can keep the battery from dropping to 0% and risking it dying every time I move the laptop slightly. I do recall about a month ago it taking longer than usual to go from 97% to 100%.
Now, do bear in mind that this laptop is nearly six years old. In a way it's a wonder the battery lasted as long as it did.
So, the guy offered to waive the cost of labour and just charge me for the battery, which is real nice of him. But this voice in the back of my head keeps telling me "funny that things were working fine before, and now I bring it to him and all of a sudden he finds two different problems that require parts to be replaced". But even if he charges more than the battery usually goes for and pockets the difference, I can't imagine he'd take home that much money, so it doesn't even seem worth it.
I just don't know. So I thought I'd ask you kind people of Reddit.
