How would you monetize narrative erotic cinema in 2026? Looking for distribution advice from filmmakers

Hi! I've been thinking a lot about the business side of narrative erotic cinema and would love some advice from people with experience in film distribution.

I'm an independent filmmaker from Sweden. One of my feature films, Alma Wants New Playmates (2023), is an erotic vampire hostage drama. It contains a lot of lesbian sex, but it's not pornography. It was made as a proper feature film with actors, a script, cinematography, and a story.

The film is currently distributed through Filmhub and is available on Amazon Prime Video, Reveel, and Relay. What's interesting is that it consistently earns money despite having a PR budget of exactly $0.

A few months ago, I uploaded the film to YouTube and it reached more than 200,000 views before it was eventually taken down.

All of this seems to confirm a theory I've had for a long time: there is a significant audience for narrative erotic cinema. Not necessarily explicit pornography, but feature films that combine sexuality with genre storytelling: horror, thrillers, sci-fi, fantasy, and so on.

I'm currently developing my next feature, a sci-fi erotic thriller, which I'm aiming to film in 2027.

What I'm trying to figure out is the business model.

For those of you working with niche cinema, exploitation films, erotic thrillers, cult films, horror, or direct-to-consumer distribution:

What platforms have worked best for you?

Is AVOD (Tubi, etc.) the most realistic path? (Alma Wants New Playmates hasn't been licensed by Tubi yet.)

Has anyone had success selling films directly from their own website?

Are there platforms that are particularly friendly to erotic but non-pornographic feature films?

How would you build a sustainable audience around this type of cinema?

It feels like the audience exists. The challenge is figuring out how to reach them and monetize the films effectively.

I'd love to hear any thoughts or experiences.
