Generator Wiring Question
I’m looking for advice on what type of wire to run for a backup generator. I’m building a cabin on an island… there’s one electrician on the island but he’s booking 6 months out so I’m in the queue. In the meantime, we’re doing some groundwork and I wanted to get the feed in from the generator location to the house. We are connected to the grid with 200 amp service. My questions are as follows: is it common for the backup generator to power the entire house or just select circuits? If we do whole house should I use the same wire size as the primary circuit (3C 250 aluminum)? Is Aluminum acceptable for that type of feed or should I use copper? I was planning to use tech cable with the run being about 90 feet. The generator will be propane powered by Generac and according to their website would need to be 22-26 kW.
Any advice much appreciated!
