Confused about my tax liability
Hi all,
It's my first time filing taxes as a US expat living the in the UK. I grew up here and have US citizenship. Previously I did not make enough to be liable to file.
This tax year (Jan-Dec 2025), I think I made just enough to have to file and so have begun using H and R block. My understanding was that you had to make quite a lot of money (in the hundreds of thousands) to be liable to pay anything. However, H and R block has estimated I owe $265. Below are rough values:
Earned income through employment: £7,000
Scholarships (taxable because they weren't used for education stuff like books etc): £15,000
Balance of non-US banks: roughly £10k
Interest/income earned from NON-US banks: £150 premium bond prizes and £1,000 lifetime ISA gov bonus (the rest of interest is almost negligible)
Does anyone know why I'm estimated to owe this much? I'm wondering whether I have entered something wrong or just don't understand the rules.
Thank you in advance.
