Is Instagram DM outreach still worth it for web design services in 2026?

I'm a beginner freelancer offering website design/development services and currently have no budget for ads.

I've been trying Instagram outreach because many small businesses are active there, but my messages rarely get opened, and even when they do, I don't get many replies.

For those of you who have successfully built a freelance business:

  • Is Instagram DM outreach still a viable client acquisition method?
  • What reply/open rates are considered normal?
  • Did you find better success with cold email, LinkedIn, local outreach, Facebook groups, or something else?
  • If you were starting from scratch today with no portfolio, no audience, and no advertising budget, where would you focus your time?

I'm trying to figure out whether I should keep improving my Instagram outreach or move my efforts elsewhere.

Would appreciate hearing what's actually working for freelancers right now.

Hi, I’m a 24M and I feel completely stuck.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve had a problem with starting work. Even in school, I would only study the night before exams. Over time, it got worse. I would make plans to study, sit down to do it, and then just… not do anything. Sometimes I would even skip exams because I hadn’t prepared.

The confusing part is that I used to be a bright student when my mom used to teach me. I would actually perform really well. But on my own, I just can’t seem to make myself work.

Now it’s affecting my career. I’ve been trying to get into freelancing for the past 6 years, but every time I sit down to approach clients, I just don’t do it. I end up wasting time, and every night I feel guilty and regret it.

My parents have a lot of hope in me. They think I’m working on something meaningful, but in reality, I feel like I’ve wasted 6 years of my life.

I also want to improve myself in many ways—learn dancing, start reading books, learn guitar—but I can’t seem to take action on anything.

On top of that, I’ve had maladaptive daydreaming since I was a kid. It takes up a huge part of my time, and even when I sit down to work or try to sleep, my mind just drifts away into it.

I’ve tried things like the “2-minute rule” and working in small time blocks, but I only work for that short time and then stop. I just can’t continue.

I feel completely lost, and it’s starting to seriously affect my life. I can’t afford therapy or a psychiatrist right now, so I’m trying to figure this out on my own.

If anyone has gone through something similar or has any advice, I would really appreciate it.
