Weird Data Analysis Interview experience at Chevron Global

Position was Data Analyst, my Yoe - 7

Interviewer started with introducing himself as Tech Lead with 10 years of experience, with an MBA from IIM Kozhikode, sounded polite.

I introduced myself.

Then he said, it’s 4 day work from office, Monday wfh, and if you come to office on Monday doesn’t mean you can take wfh any other day. Also it is 2nd shift. Do you accept?

I said yes I accept.

jumped to asking if I am comfortable with SQL, I said yes.

Interviewer - choose any two tables, with 5 rows and 5 columns, those tables should not be Employee, Salary etc (I found this weird), do left and right join, write the output.

Me - did everything he said, didn’t write the complete output, in between I asked him if this looks good, seemed redundant to me writing data for such a basic question.

Interviewer - you tell me what is your final submission!

Me - wrote complete output for both joins, told him I’m done.

Interviewer - Are you sure?

Me - Yes.

Interviewer- Are you REALLY sure?

Me - Yes(me who included nulls and blanks to show him all the scenarios)

Interviewer- okay now write a duplicate query

Me - umm, what do you mean? (I’m thinking about a query which finds duplicate records, I did not clarify that with him though stupid me thinking I’m missing something)

Interviewer - In SQL, there is something called duplicate query, write it.

Me - I am sorry I do not know about any duplicate query keyword (at this point I’m feeling weird a little, like he’s getting condescending now)

Interviewer - okay next question - Uber generates different OTPs for customer and Driver, Rapido generates single OTP for customer, tell me why and what is the functionality?

Me - do you want me to tell how it works in the backend? How they generate random OTPs ( was thinking of python random function) ?

Interviewer - tell me why do they do it?

Me who is completely thrown off - says something nonsense

Interviewer - okay forget it, tell me what is data validation lifecycle

Me - says some random stupid things about validating and reconciling data

Interviewer - forget it, tell me what is SDLC

Me - starts telling him requirement collection, planning, development, testing, deployment, maintenance. At this point I did not know what was I interviewing for anymore.

Interviewer - okay I don’t have any questions anymore, do you have any questions?

Me- No.

Call ended.

I’ve been rejected from a lot of interviews, usually I learn from those and prepare questions for the next interview. But this one felt just weird, I do not know what am I missing, I do not know what to take from this!
