Looking at potentially getting the (new) Refugio 30L and plan on using it as an EDC bag for commuting, work, some dayhikes, and going to the gym as well as traveling potentially. Seen lots of mixed reviews on the new updated design and how they removed the laptop sleeve and the load lifters.

Got a chance to see it and try it on in person at REI and not sure if i’m feeling having no load lifters, or a waist belt. Especially if i’m biking with the backpack on, or carrying heavy items. For a 30L I do think it would’ve made sense to have waist straps or load lifters at least. I am also curious how it handles being out in the rain for prolonged periods of time as well.

I was looking at the Fjallraven Skule 28L and the Mountain Hardwear Field Day 28L, both of which have waist straps.

I do really like the mesh outer though compared to the older bungee cables and plan on utilizing that to carry climbing shoes, harness, and other gear to take to the gym.

Has anyone tried it for regular everyday uses? I don’t see a whole lot of reviews yet on the new Refugio 30L.

Looking at purchasing the Mountain Hardwear 28L Field Day Bag as an EDC bag that I can use for commuting, the office, dayhikes, and to the gym mainly. I like the mesh outer so I can put my climbing shoes on the outside.

I don’t see many reviews online about it though. Anyone have any experiences with this bag?

I am also looking at purchasing the newer version of the Patagonia Refugio 30L as well, as an alternative if someone also has experience with that as well.

Planning on taking my regular beta shell on a backpacking trip to Patagonia. I've only ever taken it out on dayhikes and short overnight backpacking trips as an emergency shell, and i'm looking to build a proper layering system for low temps, moderate percipitation and high winds whilst also managing overheating under.

I know it doesn't have pit zips, can run hot, and the gore-tex isn't always the most breathable but I am trying to work around that by having a good layering system and playing around with the main zip. I have a Patagonia R1, and plan on wearing a merino wool base layer under. Looking at subbing either one of those out for something a bit thinner/better at sweat-wicking, maybe.

I know it's a city jacket, but does anyone have any experience using the regular Beta as a more technical outdoor shell on long trips? How do you manage layers under, and work around not having pit zips?

Looking for an EDC/Commuting daypack bag, preferably from an Outdoor company that looks the "outdoorsy" part, whilst also being pretty practical to carry every day on commutes, can be taken out hiking, and some travel but will be mainly used around town.

I plan on carrying around a laptop, some extra clothes, a shell, snacks/lunch, various chargers, as well as my climbing shoes, harness, carabiners, etc as part of the day-to-day — as I will be taking it to the gym as well. Was hoping for a daypack in the 28L to 32L range, preferably with a mesh or outer pocket on the outside to hold my climbing shoes and loops to hang stuff off of.

The options I had in mind were the Mountain Hardwear Field Day 28L, Patagonia Refugio 30L, Black Diamond Streek Creek 30L.

Any recommendations on similar hiking/commute daypacks? Or experiences with the ones i'm considering?
