Need advice on hamster life

TW: pet death, delete if not allowed
Going to see the vet about this, but just wanted to hear if anyone else has experience with this. I’ve had 3 hamsters, 2 have since passed but had pretty painful/traumatic deaths. My hamster is now almost 3 and not sure if I should put him down before he gets sick like they did. He seems more frail than he did, and he is balding in some spots and has flaking skin. He will still eat and go on his wheel. If he is still enjoying his life I don’t want to put him down, but I also don’t want him to suffer at the end. Not sure what to do :/ he used to run like crazy and try to jump when I try to pick him up but now doesn’t make a fuss, which is a sign to me he isn’t doing as well as he was
