I'm a 28-year-old local in Hangzhou, China.

A year and a half ago, I started a club called Chatmelt — dedicated to hosting quality events for English speakers, whether you're a local or an expat.

Here's the thing about Hangzhou: it's not Shanghai. Finding English speakers here feels nearly impossible sometimes.

But somehow, we've pulled off 100 events, gathered 600+ participants from over 50 countries, and we're still growing.

Here's what actually worked:

  1. Build rules — and stick to them.

It's tempting to bend your standards when turnout is low or someone pushes back. Don't. The rules are what protect the culture you're trying to build.

  1. Find the right venue, and don't fear rejection.

You'll hear "no" a lot. That's fine. The right space makes a huge difference in the vibe of your events, so keep looking until it fits.

  1. Guard the quality of your events — no matter what.

People will try to pull events in different directions. Stay focused on what makes your community worth showing up to. Consistency builds trust.

  1. Be intentional about promotion.

Gather strong materials, and think carefully about where and how you promote. Reaching the right people matters more than reaching the most people.

It's been one of the most rewarding things I've built.

Would love to hear from others — any community organizing experiences to share?

Here's what I learned after 402 km with my American friend in 4 days.

During the May holiday Me and my American friend Sam we came upa crazy plan, 400kms ride 🚴🏻— from Hangzhou to Wenzhou. we planned it for weeks and really did it🫡

The view was fantastic !

Along the way we went through heat stroke, brutal climbs, flat tires, muscle pain, and more chaos than we expected.

During the ride, I kept wondering why people choose to do crazy things like this.🤔

Maybe it’s because humans are creatures built to struggle — always pushing, always chasing the next challenge, always searching for something that makes us feel truly alive.

Or maybe it’s simpler than that.

Maybe we just love the view along the way…

and the strange, beautiful experience of experiencing.

In the end, perhaps the meaning was never in reaching the destination— but in becoming someone slightly different with every mile behind us.

and Yeah, my legs still recovering from thr ride😂
