I made dumplings for my little one today

I made dumplings for my little one today

Today I’m taking my one-and-a-half-year-old son back to my hometown; it’s an eight-hour journey, so I had to prepare his lunch and dinner in advance. I made dumplings—my wife prepared the filling and I wrapped them. Although they didn’t look very presentable, I truly understood why my parents always used to prepare food for me in advance when I used to go away for work.

Is laundry service usually this expensive here?

First day in shanghai, east Asian who doesn't speak Chinese.

I'm a long term nomad and needed to do my laundry, found this place close to my hotel in the city centre

Xiangwang Laundry (Hankou Road Branch)

¥110/People·Laundry

Hankou Road No.577 (Duiguoshi Starbucks Coffee)

https://surl.amap.com/3JB7jz01jaYQ

I only gave a small bag of clothes, maybe no more than 4kg, and it came to around 450 CNY! This is the most expensive laundry service I've used outside of Europe in 4 years of nomading so far. Actually, most places I used in Europe cost less too.

The place looked legit and had prices per each item, so it was the itemised pricing that made it so expensive. Is this system and pricing common in central shanghai?

EDIT: I went back to question it with a Chinese friend, and they confirmed they don't dry clean, it's just how the pricing works. Went to another laundry place nearby to get a quote and it was even more expensive! Yes, even with my Chinese friend there. To be fair, all the itemised pricing in both places were clearly shown in menu style, I just never initially counted every bit of clothing, being used to pricing per kg like in most normal countries lol

Any recommendations for places to get a custom women’s suit made?

Hello, I’m headed to Shanghai in January and I was hoping to use this opportunity to get some custom suits made. And perhaps some linen trousers. I’m a US Women’s 12-14 and I have a long torso so finding women’s suiting is rather difficult back home in the US. Plus, there’s a big drop-off in quality when comparing men’s vs women’s. I figured since a blazer in the US mostly made of wool can easily be $200-300+, why not spring for something custom?

If anyone has a suggestion, I would greatly appreciate it!

Thank you!

Please help me modify or tweak Shanghai shopping plans

Hi all,

I've been to Shanghai before but without using any guides and kind of just figured it out on my own. This time I want to get things right with all of your advice 😄

I'm going to be there for 4 days and want to plan out some shopping. I'm specifically looking for:

Linen shirts, prescription glasses and sunglasses, belts, maybe some trousers. And in electronics I'm specifically looking for a good reliable powerbank, some power conversion adapters, gym earphones. I'll also be looking for a leather-look messenger style bag.

For shirts and trousers: From the googling I've done, looks like I should just go across the bund to the fabric market and get something tailor-made. I've got existing shirts/pants I can give them to model the size off.

For prescription glasses and sunglasses: I've read about the Glasses market next to the Shanghai train station. I don't have any further details - but is this the best place to go? Can anyone pinpoint an address for this? I considered JINS but it looks like the prices are more than I was willing to pay (I'm trying to buy 4-5 pairs while I'm there and hopefully get them under 150 RMB each).

Power bank, conversion adapters, gym earphones: So far I just figured I'd check the Xiaomi store.

Messenger Bag and Belts: Undecided where best to go for this. Going to look for braided style ones and leather ones, both.

Do you have any other advice for me? Is the fake market by the science and tech museum a good option for the shirts, trousers, prescription glasses etc? I dare not go there for the electronics though.

My last experience with the fake market was that the leather style messenger bags they offered me were WELL in excess of 800-1000RMB, which is more than I'm keen to pay for a bag. At that price I can just buy them locally.

Cool bars (like Timekeepers in Beijing)

I recently went to Timekeepers bar in Beijing and realised how much we’re missing a decently priced, non-pretentious bar in Shanghai. Does anyone have any recommendations? I’ve been to the shed, Guinness social etc and (a few of) the small bars around Changle/Julu but it’s just not quite been the same vibe. Thanks!

Found this cute creature next to Suzhou Creek

It’s a place called Shenyuli (慎余里), apparently an old alley in Shanghai converted into modern high end restaurant and shopping area

Is Shanghai still the best city for internationals building a career in China?

Hey everyone,
I’m currently studying Chinese in Shanghai and I’m considering extending for another semester at East China Normal University through a more business-oriented Chinese programme.
Long term, I’d like to build my career in China, so I’m trying to figure out which city would make the most sense professionally and personally.
I really like Shanghai and the international environment here, but the cost of living is high. So I’m also wondering whether cities like Shenzhen or Guangzhou could be better options long term.
For those who’ve lived or worked in different Chinese cities:
Which city offers the best opportunities for internationals?
Which city is best for networking and career growth?
Is Shanghai worth the higher cost?
How would you compare Shanghai, Shenzhen and Guangzhou for long-term opportunities?
Would love honest opinions and experiences.

Shanghai Tea Set Shopping - Where/How

Hello,

Will be in Shanghai for 1.5 days at the end of our trip - honestly no time to waste! As much as I would love to shop in malls/see awesome shops (maybe I'll have time if they close late). I want to focus on more authentic items to purchase. We love tea (not experts - just hobby). China is the home of teas. Would love to buy some tea sets to bring home with me. Yixing , Jingdezhen Porcelain and Gaiwan? Others?

Issues:

1- HAS to be authentic as in safe. This is an item we use to drink team - CONSUME into our bodies. So no souvenir types

2- Hoping for not so overpriced touristy price. I mean - if I have to bargain for it, I don't trust it to be safe to consume. This isn't a painting, a cloth, or something external

3- This is where I need HELP: Where do I go to buy such items?

Hoping for some recommendations/advice.

Thanks

Laid Off in China(Shanghai), Looking for Visa Extension Options

Long story short, I got laid off from a Chinese company due to budget cuts. My work permit has already been canceled, and I’m currently on a temporary 30-day visa that expires on June 12. Finding a new job within 30 days feels almost impossible right now. I’ve had some interviews, contacted a bunch of companies, and honestly got ghosted quite a lot.

Right now I’m looking into visa options to extend my stay. I heard I could do a visa run to Hong Kong and come back on a tourist visa, but it seems like a gamble since there’s no guarantee whether they’ll give 30, 60, or 90 days.

Another option I’m considering is a student visa. The X2 is only for 180 days, which is okay but not ideal. The X1 would be better long term while I find another job, but from what I understand I’d need to attend classes pretty much every day, and I’d really rather avoid that if possible.

I’m currently in Shanghai. Does anyone know any private schools or agencies that can help with student visa applications? Also, are non-degree university language programs still available during the summer or around this time?

I know the timing is terrible, but I’m honestly running out of options and time. Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.

In search of Stationary stores / meat jerky I'm Shanghai

I'll be stopping by in Shanghai for 22 hours and plan to shop for two oddly specific things. First is stationary such as memo pads, notebooks, pens etc that are specifically frog themed. Especially frog themed. Or just places in general I can find frog themed merchandise! Secondly meat jerky that are packed suitable for checked in baggage. Any suggestions are most appreciated!

For Rent - FFC Ground-floor apartment with spacious rooms, big yard, front and back door - Great if you have a small dog!

Available for 12.5K (negotiable)

FFC Ground-floor apartment with spacious rooms, big yard, front and back door - Great if you have a small dog!

The apartment is in a quiet, well-maintained community, which is situated in a fantastic location - Great for accessing several metro stations (Jiashan and Zhaojiabang Lu are closest, and Shaanxi Nan Lu and Changshu Lu are also easily accessible).

It's right in prime "city walk" territory. Tons of cafes, restaurants, commercial areas and green spaces.

The reason we are leaving is because we have secured an apartment in another part of the city which is more convenient for a new job, and so our time at this lovely location has come to an end.

We would like to find a suitable tenant by June 1st.

Please get in touch if you'd like to view!

You will be avoiding agent fees and commissions by renting directly from the Landlord (he has been very helpful throughout our 4+ year tenancy).

Which spas in Shanghai have the most communal pools that men and women can enter together?

Hello, I'm traveling to Shanghai with a male friend (I'm a woman) and we want to check out a spa but most of the spas separate the pools by sex. Are there any spas that have quite a few communal pools?

Thank you!

How to improve my social life in Shanghai?

Hi,

I'm new to Shanghai and hope to join some events and make new friends. Are there WeChat groups I can join?

What's the best platform or locations to find events and make new friends? I'm particularly interested in making connections in specific fields, like entrepreneurship, etc, but anything is fine.

Thanks
