Has anyone checked work tools in luggage when flying to Australia?

Hi everyone,

I’ll be flying from Taoyuan International Airport (Taiwan) to Melbourne Airport on a direct China Airlines flight on June 1.

I’m going to Australia on a 417 Working Holiday visa, and I work in interior renovation/construction in Taiwan.

I recently bought some expensive personal tools and really don’t want to buy everything again after arriving in Australia.

The tools will all be in checked baggage only, and the toolbox should be under 20kg.

Main tools include:

  • Makita DTD173 impact driver body (NO lithium batteries)
  • hammers
  • saws
  • utility knife + replacement blades
  • other hand tools

I’m mainly wondering:

  • Has anyone checked tools like these into baggage successfully?
  • Did airline security or Australian customs give you any trouble?
  • Were utility knife blades or tools an issue in checked baggage?
  • Any packing advice?

Thanks a lot.
