Fx5 false color and cine ei
Does False Color on the Sony FX5 actually track Cine EI, or does it always read native/base ISO regardless of EI?
Sony website:
False Color applies colors to the luminance levels in the S-Log3 video output with [LUT] set to [Off] (EI gain is also not applied), regardless of the LUT application settings.
Read literally, that means False Color always evaluates the true native S-Log3 signal and ignores whatever EI is dialed in it doesn’t shift its reference point when you change EI.
But I keep running into other sources that describe False Color as EI-aware, i.e. that it re-references itself to whatever EI you’ve set, similar to how a LUT/gamma-assist preview does.
Has anyone actually tested this — e.g. exposing to the same false color reading at two different EI values and checking on a waveform/scope whether the underlying S-Log3 levels are actually the same or different? Curious whether Sony’s wording is just poorly phrased, or whether the “EI-aware” claim floating around is actually a misconception.
