Anyone actually received a Sony FX5 yet?

I pre-ordered the FX5 the moment it went up, through a major Swiss retailer. I was told it would be available from August 5th, and I was apparently one of the first ~20 people to order it there, so in theory I should be near the front of the line.

It’s now mid-August. The date has slipped twice, the retailer still has zero units in their warehouse, and they’ve told me honestly they have no shipping confirmation from their supplier yet. Meanwhile I’m hearing from other shooters that the real availability might not be until September.

What’s making me uneasy: I haven’t been able to find a single independent review on YouTube. Everything so far seems to be from Sony ambassadors or sponsored creators. No teardown, no hands-on from someone who just bought one retail.

Has anyone here actually taken delivery of an FX5 as a normal paying customer? Which country/retailer?
Is there a known official ship date I’m missing?
Is it normal for a Sony body this early to have no independent reviews out yet?

SmallRig Cage not compatible with DJI gimbals

I’m seeing a disclaimer from a photo on their website that the SmallRig cage integrated arca swiss plate isn’t compatible with any DJI gimbals. Any ideas why this would be the case? I find it hard to believe since this is the main appeal of having an integrated arca Swiss plate on the cage. I emailed them a week ago to clarify and haven’t gotten a response.

Do we need external monitor

So because the new screen of FX5 is bigger now, do you guys think if we need an extra monitor for solo shooters or you think the one that camera has is enough?

Just waiting for the cage and camera

Looks like the SmallRig advanced cage and the FX5 itself might ship at similar times now in the UK, about a month from now.

Smallrig or Tilta cage for swapping between gimbal, handheld or shoulder.

Any opinions on which cage will be best for swapping between an DJI RS4 and onto a handheld/shoulder rig?

Presume the smallrig would need a plate attaching to be able to slide onto the gimbal from both directions?

The tilta needs a separate Arca plate attaching.

The smallrig advanced looks a bit more protective than the basic.

IBIS wobbles

Around 1:13

Never seen a Sony camera with this much wobble, looks like a Canon. Is this a one particularly bad unit or has anyone noticed this problem in other videos? For comparison, the A7V IBIS looks flawless.

A7 IV to FX5 for corporate and commercial work – worth it?

Hey everyone,
I’m currently shooting with a Sony A7 IV and I’m considering moving into the Sony Cinema Line to focus much more heavily on video work.
My typical projects are:
Corporate and recruiting videos
Handcraft and industrial businesses
Municipality and tourism content
Event aftermovies
Social media content (horizontal and vertical)
Interviews and documentaries
Mostly one-man-band productions
I already own an A7 IV and a Ronin RS4 Pro. Photography is still part of my business, but video is becoming the main focus.
For those who have used both systems:
Did the FX6 significantly improve your workflow and client work compared to the A7 IV?
Was it worth the investment for solo operators?
Looking back, would you choose an FX6 or an FX3 today?
Which lenses would you consider essential for this type of work?
Current lens considerations:
16-35mm
24-70mm
70-200mm
Maybe a fast prime for interviews
I’d really appreciate hearing from people who actually earn money with corporate, documentary or commercial video production.
Thanks!

Sony FX5 not yet ready for RS Gimbals :(

I'm looking at purchasing the Sony FX5 camera soon to replace my FX3, but discovered that it doesn't yet talk to the RS3 Pro (or any other RS gimbal for that matter) yet.

It will stop and start recording fine, but it won't let you adjust anything via the back dial (like ISO).

I've flagged it with DJI so hopefully there'll be some news soon.

Gear Opinion: (2) FX5s or FX5 + FX6?

Hello!

I work in-house as a videographer primarily shooting corporate interviews, events, social content, and ads.

We currently have 4 FX3s, an FX2, and an A7IV split across two locations. We are putting in our gear requests for the coming budget, and my coworker would like to get rid of the FX3s and move to FX5s. My preference would be to have 2 FX6's and 2 FX5's—one of each at each location.

We travel a lot, so his argument is that the FX5s are more portable, it's easier to get a similar image across footage, and open gate for social content. My argument is that the FX6 would be beneficial for us because of how often we're shooting interviews.

I don't disagree with the benefits of the FX5, but it just seems duplicative to me having 4 of the exact same camera.

We plan to give the FX3s to other teams across the company, but I could possibly make the argument that we keep 2 of them so that each location has an FX3, FX5, and FX6.

My question for y'all is does it make sense to get 4 of the same camera given our needs?

Thanks!

Why are some many people on FB selling their FX5?

Not sure if anyone's noticed, but I have consistently seen multiple posts of people selling their brand new Sony fx5s on Facebook and fb marketplace. It's often people who have multiple Sony cameras, maybe real users aren't noticing the worthy jump for the money, what do you guys think?

Should I get the FX5

I currently have the FX3 and FX6. I don’t do any video editing. I mainly use these cameras to broadcast to a live stream. It was wondering if the FX5 would be a great add-on or just not necessary or should I upgrade that fx3.

FX5 Delivery

Pre-ordered 15 minutes after it was announced, but haven’t had a delivery update yet. Has anyone received theirs yet who isn’t a YouTube influencer?

Based in Germany. Stores here had 10th August down as the first shipping date a few days ago but this has now changed to the 28th August. Not sure if that means stock to Germany has been delayed a few weeks…

FX5 has 4 channels of Audio. You can make Safety Tracks!

Got my camera without the top XLR handle. Never used the FX3 XLR handle, so I decided to save money and buy the FX5 body only.

Was worried I might want it later just for that 32-bit safety. But seeing as I can play with the 4 tracks and choose the input. I can create a safety track for sudden volume spikes, e.g., when they burst out laughing or increase their speaking volume dramatically when they get excited!

I can set 4 channels with different audio levels for my MKE400 shotgun.

With the Rode wireless, I can do safety track for each L and R.

Fx5 false color and cine ei

Does False Color on the Sony FX5 actually track Cine EI, or does it always read native/base ISO regardless of EI?

Sony website:
False Color applies colors to the luminance levels in the S-Log3 video output with [LUT] set to [Off] (EI gain is also not applied), regardless of the LUT application settings.

Read literally, that means False Color always evaluates the true native S-Log3 signal and ignores whatever EI is dialed in it doesn’t shift its reference point when you change EI.

But I keep running into other sources that describe False Color as EI-aware, i.e. that it re-references itself to whatever EI you’ve set, similar to how a LUT/gamma-assist preview does.

Has anyone actually tested this — e.g. exposing to the same false color reading at two different EI values and checking on a waveform/scope whether the underlying S-Log3 levels are actually the same or different? Curious whether Sony’s wording is just poorly phrased, or whether the “EI-aware” claim floating around is actually a misconception.

CORE SWX NANO-V150 MICRO to FX5 power connection?

Hey everyone,

Just recently pre-ordered my Sony FX5. Switching over from Blackmagic and am super stoked.

I have a slightly older CORE SWX NANO-V150 MICRO V-Mount battery that doesn't have USB-C output, but has P-Tap and USB (DC Out 5V). What's the best way to connect this into the FX5?

Before I was just using a dummy battery, but doesn't look like they're available in the market right now.

Would appreciate guidance, please and thank you!
