Krieg Engineering Company: Half-Tracks and Taurox (part II)

Alright, so I went back through and did a N*zi-B*stard-ectomy on the Halftrack, and I now have three vehicles to incorporate into the Engineering Company/Regiment.

1.) Centaur "Light" Halftrack
This is based on the newer model that was recently released. Presently, I have (3) variants worked out. A standard, open-topped model ideal for towing around support weapons (and maybe even the Rapier Laser Destroyer), an armored-top command and communications vehicle, and a "Pioneer" version that has some light bridge-laying equipment. It's duties will basically be that of a medium-sized transport truck and recon vehicle. Armed with a heavy stubber.

2.) Taurox "Heavy" Halftrack
The standard Taurox with the Dual Autocanons replaced with a single pintle-mounted Autocannon and the front tracks replaced with a double-wheel system (purely for style - I mean look at it!). One vehicle is assigned to each platoon and performs all functions that a standard Taurox would do - transport a 10-man Engineer squad and it's equipment wherever needed, provide fire support with it's autocanon, and can also tow around the Platoon's Hades Breeching drill on a flatbed trailer. (I learned that the British had a tank transporter in WW2 called the Scammell Pioneer that not only could haul around a 30+ ton Sherman Medium tank, but it also bears a striking resemblance to the Taurox. This is good enough for me!). Can also mount heavy or light plows to assist with digging in the unit once it gets to it's destination. Communications and standard variant shown with both plow types.

3.) Chimera Infantry Carrier
A Chimera without a turret - primarily used as an armored Bulldozer or steamroller in the HQ platoon as well as a transport for the HQ Platoon's supporting infantry squad. It looks pretty cool, might figure something else to do with it, later! No pics of this - it's a Chimera without a turret and a large plow or roller on the front.

Krieg Combat Engineer Company - Concerning the Taurox (and/or it's proxy.)

So while I focus more on my Hades Diorama, another interesting lore-based conundrum has presented itself in regards to my engineering company.

As I started working out my Engineering Company, I knew that this would become a mostly motorized/mechanized unit due, mostly due to the sheer amount of equipment that Engineers need to haul around to do their various battlefield tasks. Imperial Armour Vol. 12 permits 5-man teams to use a Centaur Universal Carrier as a dedicated transport, and 10-man squads to use a Hades as a "transport," but the Hades is more based on game mechanics than lore - nobody is riding that thing into battle except the one guy on the back. I figured that they'd have a Taurox or some kind of Chimera-based vehicle that the squad would actually ride around in with all their equipment - perhaps with a trailer hitch and a flatbed to tow the Hades around in (not in-game, of course! That would make the Hades useless...)

Seeing as the Death Korps isn't particuarly known for using the Chimera directly (aside from the storm Chimera, which doesn't feel particuarly appropriate for Engineers to use). The obvious vehicle for this is the Taurox APC - I know that (especially in recent years), loading one of these beasts with Engineers is a fantastic way to close the distance, and honestly that playstyle fits in perfectly with this army's concept anyway.

I started out with a proxy - a heavily modified "Space Hanomag" Halftrack that has an MRAP-style mine-clearing arm and some WW2 Pioneer-style Bridge pontoons, but recently I started to wonder if it's more appropriate to simply use the Taurox directly (perhaps with the Pontoon Bridges and a heavy plow attachment?) I know that there are currently no in-game provisions to deploy one without the Autocanons (I'd imagine that the engineers would trade those in for a pintle-mounted Heavy Stubber, the ability to carry light bridging equipment, and either de-mining equipment or a plow attachment of some kind.)

Currently, I have the ability to produce both Taurox and Proxy, as well as anything in between - I've seen a LOT of kit-bashes and conversions that swap out the tracks for wheels, and as you can see I have made a version of the Taurox that itself is a halftrack...

What does everyone think? Should I stick with my Hanomag/MRAP/Buffalo mashup as a proxy, or is a straight-up Taurox with some appropriate Pioneer Stowage more appropriate? Would a Taurox realistically be able to tow around a Hades or a Rapier on a flatbed trailer when the unit is on the move between battlefields?

EDIT: Some.great points, here - I have 3 Options:

1.) Standard Taurox. Pros: Lore-Friendly, Pairs well with Engineers in-game already. Cons: Looks like a beefy Bedford HQ truck at default, and the "Dip-Sprayer" from 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit' when all the Pioneer additions are added on...

2.) Space-O-Mag Halftrack: Pros: looks gritty and believable as both a transport and for towing the squads Hades around. Cons: Nazi Bastard design.

3.) Chimera/Trojan: Pros: can absolutely carry a 10-man squad and tow the squads Hades drill around, good utility. Chassis is already in use elsewhere in the Battalion... Cons: maybe not the most interesting thing to see?

WIP: Hades Diorama - New Engineers (pt. 2)!

While I continue to figure out the lighting situation on the scene itself (pro tip: work out a wiring plan BEFORE spending literal hours printing and building...) I am pleased to report that the new Combat Engineer Squad is almost completed and thus far they look great!

I have a few pics showing the old and new Hades Operator as an example so you can see the overall difference between it and the past model - the armor is more streamlined with less of an "Apron" look, things are overall less delicate, and the modeling/printing process is FAR faster and more reliable than before!

Then squad is still primarily armed with shotguns of various types (I used the "current" FW-issued model as a base and added a full stock and muzzle to make a full shotgun - my headcanon is that you are issued the full-stock model, but are permitted to remove components as needed, such as if you are assigned heavier equipment, or have more technical tasks, etc. - in this scene, I've only issued pistol-grip shotguns to NCOs and those assigned to operate the drill.)

There is still much to do as far as clean-up and painting are concerned, but I am VERY pleased with the results, thus far! With the new system I can pretty much model them into whatever pose I need quickly and reliably, and thus far the longest print time has been only 2hr 45 minutes!

EDIT: I am gawdawful at crediting people.

By this point, the Engineers themselves are largely kit-bashed from components taken from the following Packs by JosefStaljin, BronzeAnvil, and byramadam :

https://cults3d.com/en/3d-model/game/stem-squad-alpha-2

https://cults3d.com/en/3d-model/game/stem-squad-alpha-1

https://cults3d.com/en/3d-model/game/beret-trooper-rifles-byramadam

https://cults3d.com/en/3d-model/game/arcadian-trooper-rifles

About half of the Legs for these Engineers were cannibalized from various Generic "Army Man" Toy Patterns from Thingiverse/Cults3D/maker with the foot wraps, boots, and knee guards taken from the above Engineer packs.

Their equipment was largely taken from this amazing pack from AlpineWeiss3D:
https://cults3d.com/en/3d-model/game/imperial-guard-kitbash-bits-unsupported

(Again, I wound up taking the AMAZINGLY well-modeled DKoK Shotgun and modifying it to make it look more in-line with the OG Pattern 22c Combat shotgun. Basically, I sliced off the pistol-grip back and grafted on the full stock from a Pattern 98 Lasgun - which fit PERFECTLY (Again, AMAZING work, Alpine!) and then added on a muzzle to the front.)

...I honestly do not remember where I got the Hades Model from, now...I've had it on the hardrive for years before I actually printed it. If anyone recognizes it, please let me know and I'll credit them IMMEDIATELY!

PSA: All kit-bashing components used here were obtained HONESTLY and FAIRLY - I don't think any of the ones I used in this case were for sale, but when there is a "Name your price" figure, I try very hard to make sure to at least pay SOMETHING to the original creator, and you should, too!

As for this specific group of parts, someday I will work on releasing them to the public, but for now, I'm still working out the system and making sure that all components are printable and workable, and am not ready to inflict them upon the public! Also, I do not know what will bring down the wrath of GW...

So...how do these guys work?

As I work through my Engineering Company/Regiment, I keep seeing backpacks of these, both in model and in reference books. Obviously they are some kind of Melta bomb as the name implies, but, well....how are they physically used?

Do they have to be wired up to a detonator? Can they just be shoved into place and activated like Bangalore torpedoes?

They look awfully specific - is their design based off of a real-world weapon of some sort?

I'd like to model some engineers actually putting them to use, but first I need to know how that would look!

WIP - Hades Diorama: New Engineers!

So it's been a spell since I've last updated everyone on my Hades Diorama, and that's due to something that's been bugging me: I finally decided that I didn't like my Engineer models. Something was off about them - even before I started mucking around with them.

Finally, I realized what it was - the Chest Armor was wrong, and it was throwing off the proportions of everything else. Specifically, the models I had had a full-length single-piece vest that went down to the belt, with the rest of the plates basically forming an apron that reached down to the knees. It felt akward and bulky, and as someone who has worked construction, it made about as much sense as wearing a greatcoat to do excavation work. Additionally, the armor's shoulder pauldrons were all part of the arms, which made customizing the poses difficult.

Finally, I decided enough was enough, and I started building my own 28mm Krieg Engineer models with a mind towards modularity, customization, and printability. I kept the heads, boots, and some details, but the armor has been completely scratch-built and the torsos, arms, and legs are taken from various Generic Army Man patterns as well as generic Cadian Guard Figure models. I also re-worked the hoses for the helmets - which has been a massive issue in the past!

Thus far, I am VERY pleased with the results - the second picture shows a comparison between two figures with the 1st and 3rd from the left being the original models and the 2nd and 4th being my new models. I think the new set-up is more faithful to the original source material.

I have yet to test-print anything, but if it goes well, I have decided that I will be re-working the infantry for my diorama completely - the scene will now depict a 10-man squad (complete with Melta Guns and officers) "stacking up" around/behind the Hades as they prepare to break through into an enemy tunnel. Some will be kneeling and others will be standing, all turning their attention to their officer who is signaling that the attack is about to begin.

There's still much to do, here:

1.) I need to build a new operator for the Hades - perhaps one looking to the officer for the final order.
2.) I like the idea of a Krieg Officer with a pistol and a shovel, and I'm definitely keeping that model, but he might be a bit too dramatic for this scene (Not sure how practical is is to keep both of your hands full while scrambling through rubble into an attack...)
3.) I need about (3) more Engineers standing to, but that should be easy enough. I want to try and work in another one of the new Forgeworld Shotguns into the mix in the back, and maybe a second Meltagun...
4.) This 10-man squad will have a Watchmaster, and maybe even an LT, but I need to work out how their ranks would be denoted...Probably by adding a secondary Pauldrons that would have the Watchmaster Chevrons or the Leutenants Pips clearly marked...the squad number could then be painted on the main pauldron for the entire squad...

Overall, I think this will be a MUCH better use of space for the scene AND provide me with the means and methods to make Engineers doing...well, whatever the Emperor Demands, really!

What does everyone think?

NOTE: I do not own a resin printer. I am not going to go buy a resin printer. I am quite satisfied with the level of detail I'm getting from Me Ol' Bambu. Please make your peace with this, and refrain from commenting about it.

Krieg Engineering Company: Medusa or Thunderer?

So I have a question for my fellow kriegers. My Engineering Company (see previous posts) shall have in it's inventory a 3-vehicle squadron of some kind of Demolitions-themed tank for removing...'spicier' obstacles. Originally, I figured on Demolishers (Thinking of the Churchill AVRE from WWII or from the game Company of Heroes Opposing Fronts). Then I figured on Thunderers being simpler and less resource-heavy for the Dept. Munitorum to issue/procure while serving the same function for the Engineers. Then I remembered the Medusa Siege Tank, and now I'm wracked with indecision between the Thunderer and the Medusa...

A few clarifications regarding my thinking, here:

1.) The Engineers would RARELY (if ever) use the Medusa as indirect artillery. Given that this army would be primarily a CQC/Assault fighting style, they'd be used as a medium-to-close-range assault gun intended to remove bunkers, hardpoints, and other...spicy obstacles that don't like being touched directly. Think of the Sturmtiger or Brummbär of WWII.

2.) I know that in-game, the Medusa is cheaper points-wise compared to a Thunderer/Demolisher, but the actual practicality/ability/math appears to favor the Demolisher/Thunderer.

3.) I know that the 10th/11th barely acknowledge either vehicle, relegating the Medusa to Legends status and the Thunderer to a Demolisher proxy (both in cost and functionality). I don't much care about that, though - my goal with this army is to make something that is both practical in-game but also 'realistic'...for 40k...and I realize how ridiculous that statement is now that I've typed it.

4.) Both models in the picture are Epic Scale and made/painted/weathered by me.

What does the Community think? Would a Medusa serve the same function as a Thunderer for what Combat Engineers would need it to do?

This problem has been vexing me for a while, now...

First of all, my sincere thanks to this community - the detail I have been able to get out of this wonderful machine is truly spectacular thanks to your council (special shout-out to u_BeautifulKindly7428).

This problem has been vexing me for ages, now - see photos. Clearly, the bottom layer of the object itself is having sagging issues, but it seems to not matter what I do. Even the slightest overhang results in this. Additionally, even when under continuous supports, you can see that the texture on the underside appears to be barely formed or adhered together.

This has resulted in many prints looking pristine...until you get to the bottom interface between the model and the supports. The last photo is of a vehicle that was printed at a 60-degree angle.

Usually, my clue that something has gone wrong is when I check on the print and notice some tiny bits of debris on the plate - usually from the bottom of the model where it interfaces with the supports.

Any suggestions? I'm using a 0.2mm stainless steel nozzle, standard PLA (Sunlu for these photos) and standard snug supports. I've messed about with the outer wall settings, bridge flow to 1.2, thick bridges, and slowing down over overhangs...

My current settings are here:

Krieg Engineering Company - Continued Work!

Hello!

I've been quite busy what with work and family obligations, but I have been making progress with my (Epic Scale) Krieg Combat Engineer Company/Pioneer Company. Let's get right to it!

For those just joining us, a quick recap: The Krieg Combat Engineer Company is a sub-army of the Death Korps of Krieg - their Engineers made famous during the Siege of Vraks and playing a pivitol role in the Battle of Amarah that saw the Death Korps not only hold off the invading Necrons, but actually vanquish them.

The general idea of this army is that they trade the long-range firepower made famous by the Siege Armies and the Line Korps (and certainly the Artillery) in exchange for general hardiness against firepower at all ranges (due to the Engineers ability to reinforce any structure they build or occupy), the ability to advance (albeit slowly and methodically) over/under/through any kind of terrain feature (due to the Engineer's love of heavy equipment and high explosives), and utterly devastating close-range firepower (due to shotguns, melta weaponry, and the afore-mentioned high explosives).

When on the offensive, they are slow and methodical - like any Krieg Army - but the twist is that they can remove, relocate, or straight-up ignore most (if not eventually all) terrain or obstacles that may be keeping them from an objective. This is thanks to their wide array of specialized equipment that enables them to tunnel, excavate, dig out, or simply...remove undesirable obstacles in their way.

When on the defensive, they are harder to remove than an angry snapping turtle. Their ability to reinforce whatever they are taking cover in makes VERY difficult to simply bomb them out at long range, requiring an opponent to close the distance, where the Engineers are extremely efficient at fighting. Between their shotguns, grenades, and melta-based weapons, the Engineers are able to give as at LEAST as good as they get.

Their primary atributes are the ability to remove terrain, added protection when under cover, the ability to rapidly construct trenches and foxholes, and of course, the ability to tunnel with the Hades breaching drill.

If deployed with allies, they can also provide supporting buffs (e.g. sharing the reinforced cover, dropping ammo restocking trailers, and carving out new paths of advance to follow.)

The Current layout is as shown, here: four Engineer Platoons of about 20 soldiers each w/vehicles, one Heavy Equipment Platoon, One Support Weapons Platoon, and One HQ Element. I'm pretty satisfied with the size of the Heavy Equipment Platoon, but the Engineer Platoons and perhaps the Support Platoon could reasonably be increased in size...

The main Engineer Platoons of the Company, largely following the rules laid out in The Siege of Vraks (Imperial Armor Vol. 6) and the Fall of Amarah (Imperial Armor Vol. 12). Each squad can carry a wide variety of equipent and weapons, including Melta Guns and Mole Launchers. Squads come in groups of either 5 or 10, with 5-man squads having the option of getting a Centaur as a dedicated transport and 10-man squads getting a Special Halftrack truck for theirs. Alternatively, both squad types can take a Hades into battle, although for the sake of balance, only one drill is issued to each platoon. Each Engineering Centaur comes standard with a plow attachment and a \"Toolbox Trailer\" that contains all of the equipment a standard Engineer squad may require - my figuring is that if they are bringing this with them into battle, it can serve as a resupply or swap-out point. Perhaps the Centaur can actually detach the trailer somewhere safe, turning it into a resupply point for all allied units. The Centaur itself has a pintle-mounted Stubber on top and the Bow Gun position has a standard Melta Gun installed to assist in removing debris and such. The Halftracks would be a beefed-up version of the Centaur, but in this case the vehicle itself is the resupply point. Additionally, it has the ability to lay down/pick up mines and has SOME bridge-laying capabilities (We'll get into the heavier stuff later). It would have a pintle-mounted Stubber up top, but no melta gun, relying instead on it's passengers and their explosives for protection! It also lacks a plow attachment to offset these advantages. The Hades Drills are pretty much as detailed in the books - no notes!

The Support Platoon is essentially a very truncated heavy-weapons platoon as found in most Krieg Companies. It consists of (6) light Mortar teams, (3)-(6) Heavy Bolter Teams, and a trio of Rapier Laser Destroyers, which provide the Companies only 'true' dedicated AT weapons. I show (3) Autocannons, here, but I may replace them with Bolters - I'm not sure, yet. Technically, this platoon would have access to their own Halftracks for transport/towing, though their value on the tabletop isn't quite clear to me, yet. There is also a command squad, here. These weapon teams would be deployed and attached to whatever platoon or squad requires them, often being used to secure a perimeter while their Engineer Brethren set about their work uninterrupted!

The final element is one that...well, I'm still trying to work out. It is of course the Company Command Element, and thus far consists of a Command squad, their command truck, and a communications vehicle. Any suggestions would be welcome to flesh this part out, more!

I've actually started printing some of the Heavy Vehicles, and will post pics of them as they are completed. What does everyone think? I am open to adding more Engineer platoons or adding to the Support Weapons platoon...

CREDITS: The bulk of the vehicles are the work of MK Industries on Cults3D - he has a truly spectacular collection of models - some free, some premium. In my case, everything that is based on a Leman Russ Chassis is either his or remixed from his work: https://cults3d.com/en/users/Mkhand_Industries/3d-models?srsltid=AfmBOorYzWIjU87G38YmME5rLUtqaspW2qO8y2p_h95eWSBbUca6AlTz

The infantry are the work of Speacock on Cults3D - again, tremendous detail and variety and the only place I've found (Free or otherwise) with specifically-made Epic-Scale Engineers! https://cults3d.com/en/users/speacock/3d-models?srsltid=AfmBOoqaKunGIWUrLCb54Bi-j8sY03gtzEaDG3jyS5HZ80nuNPMZONEP

The Halftrack Trucks are all based on a pattern by Usually Helpless on Makerworld. I made modifications to the roof (removed the turret, which wasn't with the downloaded model anyway) and added a front fender, mine-clearing equipment, and some bridging equipment from a real-world Pionier Sdkfz 251 Halftrack: https://makerworld.com/en/models/675882-space-hanomag-sdkfz-251#profileId-603976

The rest of the bits and bobs were mostly cannibalized from things I found on Thingiverse. See below for links:

Parts for the Atlas Excavator: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1243983 Parts for the Bridge-Layer Tanks: https://cults3d.com/en/3d-model/game/mtu-90-bridge-layer Parts for the Roller Attachment: https://cults3d.com/en/3d-model/game/orc-ork-armoured-mobile-battle-fortress-halftrack Hades Drill: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2869729 Bulldozer: ...for the life of me, I cannot find where I found that bloody pattern from. Like I said, I'm not sure what to do with it anyway and may swap it out for something else.

I present: The Atlas Excavator!

So, the original Siege of Vraks Books make mention of "Atlas Excavators" twice (once during the push to relieve Captain Tyborc at Fort A-453 and then again during the final assaults on the main citadel). We obviously know what Atlas's are, but after months of searching, I've never even seen so much of a piece of fan-art showing what the "Excavator" version looked like. This bothered me, as I felt that the vehicle itself would be more than just an Atlas Recovery Vehicle with a plow on it, and that it would be a vital piece of kit for an Engineering Company. Finally, I decided that if you want something done...

I took an STL. of An Atlas Proxy, removed the crane and the built-in armored winch motor, and replaced that with a large turret mounting an excavator arm. The excavator arm itself is fully articulated and taken off of the pattern for a toy that I found on thingiverse - when stowed, it is not taller than a standard Leman Russ tank (this is important to me for believability - I'm an Engineer in real-life!). The control cab is the crew compartment off of a Krieg Sentinel Walker, and the heavy dozer blade is taken off of a 6mm scale generic heavy bulldozer pattern also meant for 40k (I'll probably include that model in my Company inventory at some point, too.)

Based on how they were utilized on Vraks (clearing the path of an assault while under fire), I figured that some modest armament would be appropriate, so this model will eventually receive a pintle-mounted Stubber up at the cupola to ward off infantry. The Bow -mounted stubber/bolter has been replaced with a heavy multi-Melta, but this is less for anti-armor work and more for removing obstacles and rocks that the excavator arm would otherwise struggle with - similar to the Hades Breaching drill. Not to say that it couldn't be used on enemy fortifications in a pinch, it's just not the original intention!

All the heavy vehicles in my Company have a standard dozer blade by default, so I figured this beast would get something a little heavier up front, hence the bigger plow blade. I am toying with the idea of one or two vehicles in the platoon having some kind of roller attachment (for clearing mines or for flattening out debris to make new paths of advance.) Thus far, though, I haven't made or found a suitable pattern for such an attachment.

In-game, the main ability for this vehicle would be its ability to rapidly add or remove terrain features, obstacles, or trenches from the board. How many turns/points it would take to complete this task, I do not know (I really am more into making the models than I am playing the game XD) but I would imagine it would be faster than a squad of engineers or the Hades. I feel it could add a new interesting mechanic to the game unique to the Engineers, who are already established as master excavators.

I'll share more pics once I've got it painted and fully assembled!

Further Development: Krieg Combat Engineer Company

So after some monkeying around with Epic-Scale Vehicles, I think we are on to something!

You can look up my past post on the topic, but the overall concept remains the same: a Krieg Engineering Company specializes in building defenses, reinforcing defenses, building obstacles, removing obstacles, and tunneling. All of these tasks are generally done up close and personal, and more than a few require high explosives and Melta equipment. As a result, their equipment is naturally geared towards these tasks first and foremost: Melta weaponry is issued to aid in excavating, shotguns are a primary firearm, and demolition charges are common. Terrain is...not a permanent concern with this group.

As a result, the Engineers lack the heavy long-range firepower of the Artillery Corps and the mobility of the Armored Corps. They make up for this by being experts at defense and being astonishingly brutal in close-quarters brawls.

Thus far, the basic setup of the Engineering Company is (4) standard Platoons, (1) Heavy Platoon, (1) Command Platoon, and (1) Support Platoon.

Shown here are the (4) Standard Platoons and the Heavy Platoon. Each Standard Platoon is built around 5-man or 10-man squads as laid out in the various rulebooks. The 5-man squads would be issued a Centaur Carrier and Trailer, and the 10-man squads would be issued a Chimera (or something similar - I'm still working on that.). I'm thinking that another 10-man squad and transport per platoon would be appropriate, but I want to work on the transport vehicle a bit more. At the moment, I am showing some Chimeras without their turret (I was orginally thinking some kind of version of the Trojan, but they do not appear to have a hatch on the back for people to get in and out of...). They wouldn't be issued dedicated Anti-Tank equipment per se, but given that Krieg Engineers are already issued Demolition Charges, Melta Charges, Krak Grenades, Melta Guns, Mole Launchers, and a whole assortment of ways to remove bunkers, one would imagine that any tank that closes the distance will be punished severely for its boldness...

The Heavy Platoon is for removing larger or more stubborn obstacles and consists the heavy vehicles. Specifically, (4) Atlas Excavators and (2) Thunderer Seige tanks. (5) Hades breaching drills are also held in reserve to be issued as required to whatever squad/platoon needs it. There may be a squad or two of standard line infantry to escort the vehicles, or they may be escorted by the support platoon (see below). The Excavators are only armed with a bow-mounted multi-melta to assist with removing obstacles/offensive vehicles that get too close, and also a pintle-mounted stubber to ward off enemy infantry. The rest of their work (removing/building obstacles) is done by their dozer blades and their excavator arms. The Thunderers would be issued to the company as they are less complex and resource-heavy to use than a full-on Leman Russ Demolisher, which logistically makes more sense to me for an engineering company to use. These Vehicles would also be armed with a pintle-mounted stubber to defend against infantry, while their main cannon would be trundled up to remove more...stubborn obstacles that maybe don't like being touched directly. Now that I look at it, there should probably be some kind of command vehicle for this platoon, but I'm not sure what that should be - probably a Centaur or a Salamander?

The Command Platoon (Not shown) would likely be something like a Salamander or a Centaur (or whatever the CO wants to use) along with perhaps a heavy weapons squad and a squad of line infantry.

The Support Platoon (also not shown) would be a hodgepodge of heavy weapon teams (mortars, Heavy Stubbers, Bolters, MAYBE a couple-odd Quad Launchers depending on what Command sees fit to issue for the campaign, etc.) and some line infantry. Their job would be to maintain the perimeter and cover the engineers while they do their work. Any dedicated heavy anti-tank weaponry that the company would be issued (outside of the standard man-portable equipment carried by the squads above) would also be found here - heavy lasguns, autocannons, and the oddball Rapier Laser Destroyer would be assigned to this platoon.

What do we think? I'm open to any ideas for the Support Platoon and the Command Platoon or any additional equipment or personnell that may assist the Company in it's mission of building (and, uh, removing) obstacles!

EDIT: After coming across some FAR superior Epic Infantry models that include Engineers, I've updated the Company to include a Command crew and vehicle, added in the Support Platoon, and swapped out the Chimera Hulls for this nifty Halftrack Pattern I found online. I've also added in a command Demolisher tank to the Heavy Platoon, figuring that "The Beast" would be the commander's vehicle. See Comments below for an updated screenshot!

EDIT 2: Goodness, where are my manners? Here's a link to the current company: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1tiYmI9ucnuc2uahLxWNTT1KUEJlSySOW/view?usp=drive_link

Work continues on the lighting for the Hades Scene!

I've been able to scratch-build some cylinder housings for the lights - now I need to draw/paint/scratch-build some cages around them, wrap the wires with black tape to turn them into cables, and then work out where the battery box and switch will go, and we can wrap up the wiring for this one!

u/Familiar_Tangelo_328 — 2 months ago

Started some lighting experiments on the Hades Diorama!

Work continues on the diorama. While the engineers are getting painted, I decided to take some time and experiment on lighting. I installed hooks set up in back along the top corner of the wall (which seems logical from a real-world view) but it turns out that the Hades basically blocks all the lighting and cool effects, so now I'm thinking that I should install another hook into the rock wall to the right. That way, the Engineers will be illuminated while still conveying the right confines of the mine!

Note that I am planning on modifying the lights to be smaller - they are basically fairly lights wrapped in yellow cellophane and stuffed into a Christmas tree light bulb right now, so I can definitely refund them down to look more like a scale lantern!!

Some advice for my Little Centaur?

So I am working on a scratch-built conversion of a Centaur Carrier into a dedicated Engineers transport (part of my vehicles of a Krieg Engineering Company idea) and I have a general idea of what I'm doing with her (stowage locations, an armored trailer to keep demo charges, a rolled up tarp roof, deleting one of the fold-down seats to make room for a gun rack and the Mole Launcher storage) but I feel like the front passenger position needs a little something extra.

The lore states that grenadier squads can use their heavy weapons for this firing port, so maybe the engineers can, too. The Mole launcher seems a bit OP/complicated, but maybe a Melta gun? I toyed with cramming an industrial Multi-Melta like in the Hades...

What do y'all think?

Continuimg work on my Engineers Diorama!

Well, I think I've gotten the structural And weathering components of the scene itself set (thanks to.a breathtaking amount of pigments and ground-up sidewalk chalk). Now, I just need to find a 3-light chain of yellow LEDs to wire into it to give some proper lighting.

While I search for that, I also have a shot of the rest of the squad that will be shown following behind the Hades. Obviously they'll need to be painted, too!

My first 40k diorama (WIP)

Still a ways to go, yet - still need to paint the rest of the squad, wire up some LEDs in the back, weather and muddy up the whole thing in general - but I thought I'd share my very first 40k diorama. It's inspired by the Death Korps Engineers escapades under Vraks and features a Hades Breaching drill and as many engineers as I can show stacked up behind it before it punches through!

Concept: Krieg Engineering Company

This has been something rattling around in my head for a while, and I made this comment on another post, but I feel like it's worthy of its own post/discussion.

So what I love about DKoK is that they have their own cannon Engineering Korps, and I've been thinking up ways to make an engineer-centric army and how to make it work.

A Krieg Engineer 'Army' would likely be more of a company-sized force (like the scenario is they they have been tasked with building a base somewhere and have been ambushed or attacked.) In practice, they would be like a Snapping Turtle: slow and cumberaome in movement, but very difficult to eliminate at longer range and a bloody nightmare to square off with if they close the range.

Defensively, they naturally would have some kind of enhanced fortification booster (because, well, engineers.) Between their obsession with concrete, their penchant for digging and tunneling, and them being engineers I general, I would imagine that once they were dug in, even the Iron Warriors would have a mess of a time trying to dislodge them from a position (we know that the Necrons failed to do so...). Of course, they would still take casualties, but that's just how the IG is in general, right?

Offensively, they would lack the long range firepower of the line corps (and especially the artillery), perhaps only having a couple mortars and heavy weapons, but their primary infantry unit is armed with shotguns, Melta charges, grenades, and demolition charges, to say nothing of Melta guns, which would tell me that once within a certain distance, any foe would have a...very eventful time trying to fight them.

When they do have to close the distance, they would of course have the Hades Breaching drill, but also some other special vehicles. I would imagine that the standard 5-man squad would have Access to plow-fitted centaurs (perhaps with a trailer to hold the more explode-y bits of equipment) and maybe a special type of Chimera (or perhaps one of those new half-tracks) for the 10-man squads. The Centaur would be armed with the standard Pintle-mounted stubber and maybe a Melta gun.

For heavier vehicles, the Siege of Vraks rulebooks mention Atlas Excavators (which I picture as Atlas recovery vehicles fitted with a dozer blade and replacing the crane with an excavator arm.) these would still have a bolter (or maybe a Melta Gun) in the bow, and perhaps a stubber in the cupola. Nothing that's going to snipe a tank at range, but armored enough to proved mobile cover as they advance!

Between these excavation-themed vehicles and the sheer amount of HE and equipment that the infantry carry, I feel that a cool feature of this army would be that they can just...remove terrain as they need to. Small rock formations blocking the path of offense? Not anymore. Bunker choking things off? Clear it with gas grenades, then let the Hades and Excavators literally demolish it!

They would possibly still have some standard line infantry (to occupy constructed positions until the full army occupied them) and maybe a couple of lighter mortars and heavy bolters for general fire support, but they wouldn't have the heavier guns of a full siege army.

When the Engineers face off against Heavier enemies like Chaos Astartes, their Krak Grenades, Melta Bombs/guns, and demo charges would likely carry the day (of course they would take heavy casualties), but perhaps their shotguns could be used to cause additional shenanigans (I would imagune that the eye ports of an Astartes helmet would be...somewhat allergic to flechette rounds...)

I built this idea off of the various Imperial Armor books (volumes 5-7 Siege of Vraks, Vol 12, etc) which covers the engineer squads...

What does the community think? I'm actually scratch-building an Engineer Centaur presently as well as a potential Atlas excavator...
