How did you end up with your current 4x4 platform, was it planned or pure luck?

Been going back and forth on this for a while and curious what the community thinks. There are so many solid platforms out there, old and new, and everyone seems to have strong opinions on why they landed where they did.

For some folks it comes down to parts availability and cost. For others it's the aftermarket support, the community around a specific rig, or just what they could actually find locally for a decent price. Some people inherited a platform through family or a first vehicle and just stuck with it.

There's a lot of variety in this sub, from classic leafsprung trucks to older Japanese rigs to more modern setups, and people either put real thought into their choices or stumbled into them by accident and grew to love what they have.

What was the deciding factor for you? Did you research heavily before buying, or did a deal fall into your lap and you ran with it? Looking back, would you make the same call again, or is there a different platform you wish you had gone with instead?

Would love to hear the stories behind the rigs, not just the specs. The reasoning and the journey are usually more interesting anyway.

Anyone else find backpacking trips help reset your mental clarity more than any other activity?

I've been backpacking for a few years now and recently started paying more attention to how I feel before and after a trip, rather than just focusing on gear, miles, and destinations. Something about being a few days out from a trailhead with no signal genuinely changes how my brain operates. The mental noise from work, screens, and daily routines seems to dissolve somewhere around day two. I sleep better, think more clearly, and come back feeling like a different person.

Curious whether others experience this and whether you've found ways to intentionally design trips around that reset feeling rather than just chasing summits or scenery. Slower itineraries, more time at camp, journaling, or just sitting quietly near water seem to amplify it for me.

Do you plan trips with mental reset as a goal, or does it just happen naturally? Have you found certain environments make a difference, like dense forest versus alpine exposure? Would love to hear how others approach this because I think there's a real conversation to be had beyond gear and route planning. This community seems like the right place to ask
